I need to put a patch on the arse of the trousers I've been using for winter commuting. I love them and I don't want to have to bin them, but they weren't made for cycling and the arse has gone through where it rubbed the edge of the saddle.

Patching the arse of trousers is hard enough at the best of times, and the fabric is stretchy which makes it worse, so what I wanted to do was stick the patch in place with something sticky then sew around it with the overlocker. Hopefully then I could wash out the sticky stuff (ahem).

I'm considering using golden syrup, or maybe some kind of flour paste. Any ideas?

Or I suppose I could use normal iron on webbing and just leave it in situ. I don't want a stiff arse though.

Golden syrup will attract insects 🙄

Attract insects? I'm not going to leave it in place, the whole point is that it washes when I'm done.

Even tacking it is going to be difficult. Hence wanting glue. The patch has to be completely flat on the existing trousers and remain so until I've finished.

I've tried patching the crotch of trousers before and it's enormously difficult.

Asda do a latex in a small yellow/blue bottle that is brilliant for this sort of stuff.

Ooh, latex.. not a bad idea. Won't wash out but it would be flexible enough to stay in place. Where do they keep it?

Copydex glue, white squareish bottle, red top, is latex-based. It smells of ammonia which you hope will evaporate. Not sure about flies, though...

Come to think of it the kids have washable glue, PVA type stuff. Although, having said that.. sewing machine might not appreciate sewing through glue!

Cos I want it done now, for next week, and I don't want to pay someone to do something I can do myself.

Copydex glue,
That's the one, although you can get cheaper types from craft shops.

Won't PVA dry leaving a white residue...?

Stretchy fabric. Not designed for cycling. Food-based solutions.

I now have an image of molgrips in a pair of washed out jeggings with a hole in the backside of them and golden syrup oozing from the hole.

Well I didn't want to suffer on my own with this awful image! 🙁

Can't you pin it into place before sewing? Then remember to remove the pins... 🙂
