The 'rule of thumb' has been said to derive from the belief that English law allowed a man to beat his wife with a stick so long as it is was no thicker than his thumb. In 1782, Judge Sir Francis Buller is reported as having made this legal ruling and in the following year James Gillray published a satirical cartoon attacking Buller and caricaturing him as 'Judge Thumb'. The cartoon shows a man beating a fleeing woman and Buller carrying two bundles of sticks. The caption reads "thumbsticks - for family correction: warranted lawful!"

It seems that Buller was hard done by. He was notoriously harsh in his punishments and had a reputation for arrogance, but there's no evidence that he ever made the ruling that he is infamous for. Edward Foss, in his authoritative work The Judges of England, 1870, wrote that, despite a searching investigation, "no substantial evidence has been found that he ever expressed so ungallant an opinion".

It's certainly the case that, although British common law once held that it was legal for a man to chastise his wife in moderation (whatever that meant), the 'rule of thumb' has never been the law in England.

Not my area of work or speciality, although we do sell something similar (for consenting adults)

Being locked in a custody cell with a guy on remand for murder is not the picnic in the park that the Daily Mail might have you believe.

If ('t') = $C$10
If ('lo') = $C$11
If ('De') = $C$13
If ('K1') = $C$26
Then actual deflection =($C$11-$C$10)*(D32/100)
And actual load in Newtons =905495*(($C$10^4)/($C$26*($C$13^2)))*(B32/$C$10)*((($C$12/$C$10)-(B32/$C$10))*(($C$12/$C$10)-(0.5*B32/$C$10))+1)

In the modern milling process, brown & white flour are made in exactly the same way.
We just throw some of the stuff we have sifted off back in at the end (unless its wholemeal when we throw all the crap back in)

Oh and I work for the firm that makes the flour for Kit Kat's, Jaffa cakes & Soreen Malt loafs.

Nascar damping pistons have alot of tiny prots in then to deal with tiny high speed movements to reduce vibration.

Don't ask me how I know this, lets just say I had an interesting meeting last night.......

With all main hose reels connected at normal operating pressure the tank on the majority of fire appliances (1800 litres ish) will be empty within 40 seconds.... if you have a fire hydrant outside your house, maybe dont park over it.

You can get a muscle to contract more strongly if you stretch it quickly first.

The equity markets are only now beginning to realise the scale of the carnage ahead. Ireland is bust, Portugal is next.....if Spain goes down you all want to start stocking up on tinned food and shotgun cartridges.

I know of a prison that, due to government cutbacks, cut the amount & quality of the food it was giving to prisoners in an effort to save £5k a year. The prisoners went on the rampage (mainly) because of this & now It's going to cost £5,000,000 to fix 3 wings.
All fugures are ficticious but you get the idea.

TJ, my brother is a journalist and I've really, really tried to get him not to use the phrase, but he says even when he is accurate, the sub-editor changes it back; what can you do?

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Fascilitation?

I'm not the Stig. However, I do know that the ideal angle of approach for a car wheel to mount a kerb to drive around an object blocking the road is 45 degree. At this angle the chances of puncturing are far less.

I also know that if you drive too fast and lose control of your car, then try to stop it with your head against a tree, the tree will always win. Additionally, you will not have a head left and you'll spread your brains for a considerable area.

Although not associated with any diagnostic hominin fossils, the blade-based leaf points of the Lincombian-Ranisian-Jerzmanowician technocomplex are believed to have been manufactured by Late Neanderthal populations during the later stages of Marine Isotope Stage 3.

Nope, not a crash test dummy, though at times...

My daily vernacular consists of phrases such as "back stop" and "over penetration"!

The UK, particularly the South West is at a once in every 50 year risk of being hit by tsunamis.

In the past they've killed people on the Scilly Isles and flooded up to 500m in land.

The Xenon arc lamps (bulbs) used in cinema projectors can rate up to 15000 watts and can explode with the force of a car bomb if dropped or damaged. Body armour has to be worn when replacing them.

I can hear Trouties brain calculating the size of battery and run time with that bulb right now.
