I want to get a new camera, one that charges the battery through a USB cable (rather than a dedicated take the battery out type charger). I'm struggling to find a list of what cameras do that and even when looking on the manufacturers websites they offer conflicting infomation.
anyone have any clues or advice?

Just look at the included accessories on the manufacturer's websites. Should give you a clue.
Lumix TZ30. Spare batteries are also cheap and readily available, as they're common across a wide range of Lumix cameras. I carry a charged spare in the little Timbuktoo case that the camera goes into, and I'll get another sometime soon.
