want to talk to friends abroad and have been told that skype is the wat forward
what do we need if we want to talk via the laptop (not wireless)to get going;
1. phone recommendatons
2. what software and where from
3. web cam (so that we can video link) and where from
4. anything else?

pretty much any webcam, get one with a mic built in and that is all you need
The skype software you download free from their website.
Get a USB phone that plugs straight into your laptop (it will come with a set-up CD). We got a cheap Philips one which is fine.
oh and use a table lamp to illuminate your face, more light=more quality
You don't need a phone if you don't want, you can just use the speakers and mic (if you have one) on your laptop. Otherwise get a webcam with a mic integrated, you can get them a couple of quid now from somewhere like maplin or micro direct.

1, No phone needed, just a headphones with mike plugged into the USB slot

3. USB webcam if you want to see faces / bottoms or anything else
