Looking to relocate for job near Skipton (Broughton). A brief scout around at house prices indicates I'd get more bang for my buck in Barnoldswick than other nearby places.

What's it like? Is the tv and radio reception as crap as I've been reading?

i spent a weekend there with a lady, we ended up under a off licence in some sort of "members only" jazz/blues club thing, stayed in a house on the canal just up from the hope/RR factory, seemed a nice place to me

i didn't ..*cough*..have time to watch tv 😉

Crosshills is nicer, thats where i live, 4 miles from skipton, the house prices are anything from £80,000 to a couple of million, try the estate agent wilman & wilman they have a web site 😀

I only ever ride through Barnoldswick - I live a couple of miles from Broughton in Carleton. If you want to live in a village, look at Carleton, Broughton, Thornton, Elslack. As soon as you look at any villages inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the house prices leap.

I wouldnt think that Barnoldwick be hugely different to Skipton really.

Its OK used to have a fighty reputation but I think that is gone now
true radio reception is not great .

Not a massive selection of rides from your door but easy access to the dales / lakes / Gisburn forest

And these shit loads of riding to be done with the dales just on your door step 😀

Funny I suggested Barlick to the wife 25 years ago and she said the same as plumber 😆

My sister lives there and I agree with plumber, nothing would make me move there ever.

I think I understated my true feelings on the matter

what, worse than Calgary? 😉

the singer in my band comes from Burnley (it's ok, he escaped), says Barlick is a hole. Personally, I've never been, but it can't be worse than Bradford. Can it?

Like said above, try Crosshills and/or Cononly. It's a lovely ride along the canal into Skipton, I do it most days from/to Bingley. Actually, you could also look at Bingley prehaps. 20mins down the Air valley dual carriageway, 20mins on the train or 1hr on the canal tow path.

Thanks everyone, some food for thought there.

I'm already over in Addingham but can't afford to buy here 🙁

Those of you who've dissed Barnoldswick - I'm thinking it's probably an improvement on Streford 🙂

Ooh, someone dissing Bradford. How original! From Leeds are you?

Bingley is OK, work near there. All the traffic tends to head the other way so the commute out from there wouldn't be too bad.

well, technically yes, I am from Leeds - born in LGI - but I lived in Bradford from 1982 (when I came here to do a degree) to 1998 when we moved to Baildon, and we've been in Baildon ever since. So get off your high horse.

I can quite honestly say that the Thornbury/Bradford Moor area is ****in shoite, having lived there for 8 years from 1990-1998 and only just got rid of the house in April this year

I think I'm allowed to diss my own "hometown"

I'm not on my high horse. I was born in Bradford and have lived here for 29 of my 37 years, and currently live within a couple of miles of you. I know it's not perfect (a drive from your house to the city centre will tell you that) but it's my home town, and there are some brilliant things about it. But no-one ever looks at them, they're just interested in the latest killings or racial tensions. It really yanks my chain.

Barlick gets a lot of completely unjustified bad press - it's a fabulous place to live!!!! Plumber's from Nelson and can't spell - I strongly recommend you treat his opinion with the contempt it deserves 🙂 Happy to help
