[#2407823]

After a $hit few months dealing with Testicular Cancer, Ive decided to treat myself to a new watch. I know nothing about these watches other than Mr Bond wears one and that there quite expensive.

Anyone got one? Are they a reasonable 'investment'? Which model should I be looking at? GMT? Manual? Automatic? as I say I'm sticking my toe into unknown waters!

Thanks

J.

I used to have an Automatic 2008 model, i loved it but i recently traded it in for an Oris Automatic Titan Divers which i felt was a bit more unique.
Omega's are fantastic watches and as long as you take care of it then it will last for decades and still look good.

As anokdale says, check out tz-uk. A few months spent lurking there and popping into shops to try things on eventually led me to buying my Seamaster Aqua Terra, which is top notch. Enjoy!

I love my Omega Seamaster. I wear it every day.

I've had it since 2005 and it still looks like its in excellent condition and the glass is perfect cos its so hard. I have knocked it against walls a few times by accident but it has remained undamaged.

I only paid £400 for it s/h from a bloke who never wore it cos it was so special....!!! ???? he was scared of damaging it.

Since I've had it, I've needed to change the battery once. I think it cost £80.

Treat yourself mate and I hope everything gets sorted.

Because of the other thread I have decided to dig my old Omega out, it is nice, but I would rather wear the Oris everyday purely as hardly anyone knows it's expensive & what it is, thus preventing silly conversations & presumptions about to many things to mention.

Having said that I would always advocate having a nice watch, my mate has a 25k rolex that looks almost identical to the base model, not many people know its white gold & diamonds, but he does, suits him, & I would love to be able to afford one.

I've got an America cup Ltd seamaster and I love it...had it 7 years and it still looks great! I never take it off...I got it serviced last year and it was 300 quid...costs 50 to insure every year. Was offered 500 more than I paid from a dealer last year....

If it's a seamaster you're after have a look at a Planet Ocean, my favourite seamaster. I'd agree that the 42mm aqua terra is a lovely sporty/elegant design.

Vintage omegas for me. As others say tz is a good start. A railmaster would be my vote.

I have a Seamaster quartz that I bought 11 years ago and still looks like new even after wearing it every day and it's only had two batteries fitted, it's fantastic. I have recently bought a Seamaster Professional Automatic and was going to sell the quartz but I can't bring myself to do it yet!! Buy one, you won't regeret it.

go vintage. I had one of these:

[img] [/img]

Omega Flightmaster.

If I could afford it I'd buy another one without question as I think they're great, not only a lovely watch but a good investment at the moment. Mine was older than I am! I bought it from auction for £300 odd, wore it daily for 5 years and then had to raise cash when we moved house so sold it for 3 times what I paid for it. It'd now be worth another £300 on top of the price I got a couple of years ago...

I got a Seamaster in 2002 as an engagement present. Apart from a couple of scuffs on the bracelet it look new and I wear it every day.

If you buy the automatic don't expect it to be the World's best time keeper. Mine drops about 6 seconds a day... but if I want accuarate I'll wear my G-Shock.

I wouldn't play squash, golf or ride a bike whilst wearing it either.

When I'm dead in 50 years my son can have it. I expect it to still be working.

Good luck on beating the cancer. Buy a Seamaster and leave it to somebody when you are 95.

I can't decide between this:

Tough call. They're both good looking bits of kit.

If it was my money I'd go for the first one as I wouldn't use all the stop watches and alarms.

I think your right Harry. Face looks to cluttered in the other one. I'll need to see them in the flesh I think.

I really like the Planet Ocean. I settled on a Rolex Sea Dweller (before they got too heavy duty) and I smile every time I look at it.

I have a Seamaster Diver 300 automatic had it as a 40th birthday present and I love it. I wear it every day and its built like a brick poo house, so don't tend to worry about damaging it.

I also have a older speedmaster automatic with a leather strap which I love but it is much more fragile and I always worried about damaging it.

Go for it I say, its a really nice wear everyday watch that still feels special.

Would live a Tag Monaco as well 🙂 , but would not wear it every day for the reasons above.

Edit to add

I have this one

http://www.omegawatches.com/gents/seamaster/300-m-chrono-diver/22258000

It does not look as blue in real life. Well worth going to see them in the flesh and putting them on as you may change your mind. Also remember shops will deffo do a deal on price, you should not have to pay list for it.

Johnyboy - remember you can only get the chrono in 45mm so if you are looking at the 42mm you'll only be able to get the non chrono. If it were me I'd go for a 45mm non chrono with black bezel on a bracelet. Plus if you are looking at the chrono you are nearly in submariner territory.

Nice watches... the SMPs in particular sits really comfortably on the wrist. I've had an auto Seamaster Professional for a few years and it's been absolutely faultless - 2531.80.00 model if memory serves, picked it up secondhand for about £700 in pretty much mint condition.

One thing though, watches are rarely a particularly sound investment. They do depreciate heavily and there's a very active secondhand market for them if you want to try and pick up a bargain. Autos hold their value a little better than quartzes - I don't recall ever seeing a manual SMP though.

If it's depreciation you're concerned about
buy a rolex sports model. They hold their value better than anything else. My old GMT II which I had for 5 years, I bought it for £2350 in 2003 and sold it for £2600 in 2008. If I were buying a new watch I'd only buy a steel rolex sports, anything else I'd pick up used. I saw a planet ocean over on tz uk yesterday for £1500 but you can pick them up for around £1350.

I have a bog-standard 76 Seamaster with a leather strap, and I love it. It's simple, but has character and looks good with a suit.

Sod watches though. How are you feeling?

Had one, automatic movement.
Got it about 5 yrs ago. Friend of family is 2nd stunt director on Bond films and gave me mine FOC having got job lot for the film.

Kept v.poor time, needed a service, service costs were OTT, sold it on.

lovely looking watch though. Went for smaller face, larger size is moo-hoo-sive.

After about 3yrs. if I didn't wear the watch for say 24hrs it stopped, until you had a hand shandy to re-charge it again.

Go try them on Johnny!! And believe me the larger face all though its only a tiny amount looks far better imo! Also look at the black rubber with orange stitching! I chose the chronometer Orange bezel and Orange alligator because it just set it away from the norm!! Happy shopping!!!!

Thanks for all your advice guys. I'm heading into Glasgow tomorrow to investigate these further. I never really liked the idea of a second hand watch, but it sounds like there are huge saving to be had going that route. Head says used, heart demands new! Lol.

Bullheart: I'm doing great, I've been a very lucky guy if truth be told. I found cyst and doc sent me for a ultra sound as a precaution, it flagged up a tumour deep within my testicle which would never have been detected until it was huge otherwise. The most horrible word I know now is orchidectomy (testicle removed) lol. It's a small price to pay for my life I suppose. I've been cancer free for 3 months now, I've never been ill, no radiotherapy or chemo needed and mentally (the bit I was worried about) I'm doing great too.

So Im feeling kind of good right now, god knows there's at lot of people not as fortunate.

Thanks for the comments and check those balls!!

Cheers

John

2000 quartz seamaster here too. Keeps excellent time and is worn every day. Nice understated mid-size model without all the stupid chrono bits. Not as happy with it durability-wise as my old Tag but if I'm honest, more classy though 😆

Mr Bond wore a Rolex Sub in the books - in the films he even wore a Casio...

If you get a mechanical be prepared for several hundred on servicing every five years.

If you get a leather strap be prepared to replace it every few years - the Omega alligator strap is > £240. If you wash the strap with saddle-soap regularly it will last longer.

Make sure you also try a Speedmaster on - when I was looking for a watch I noticed people getting hooked on watch collecting and talking of their next watch being a OWN (one watch nirvana), like it was the ultimate fix and would break them out of their need to keep upgrading. Some OWNs were the Luminor, a Rolex Sub, and the Speedmaster seemed the cheapest OWN.

I am happy with my moonphase and feel no desire to ever change, although I probably wouldn't go for an expensive watch if I was starting again.

Turner quick highjack here but can you use the saddle soap on the Orange strap?? In all honesty that strap really is a fashion thing as its a watch that'll be good to 600m but you can't even wear in the shower due to the leather. Hence my investment in the Orange rubber strap as well!!

If it is leather I should think so - I kept my alligator going for quite a while before I needed to replace it.

You only need to wash the inside.

I'd always get a bracelet. You can get aftermarket straps which are easily the equal of oem straps for a far cheaper price. (Hirsch, Toshi etc).

My FIL has a couple of old watches: an Omega and a Rolex. Each were left to him, and so are a good 50 years old.

He inadvertently washed the Omega in a pair of trousers, finding it in pieces in the pocket.

After several months away being repaired, it's now back with him. Lucky, lucky man.

Johnboy373 - congrats on being well, and enjoy the shopping. Thankfully, a lack of funds has always kept me away from expensive watches, or the money I would soend would make my fountain pens seem cheap in comparison. Once you find the one that your heart says "yes", buy it fast..!

Btw, a new planet ocean is around £2300. Should be able to haggle that down to £2000-1900 without too much trouble. Play dealers off against each other. They will really want your business atm.

Just for the record Russell Talerman in London can service mechanical watches for much less than the manufacturers and is excellent.

He also restores vintage ones to a very high standard.

Speedmasters look nicer to me but there is no denying the quality of Omega all round.

Once you've decided on the one you want, check out the dealers; there are also a couple of online options that should knock a few hundred quid off.

🙂 It took me a while, but it eventually boiled down to the missus pointing out that as a watch to wear day to day, something big and chunky wouldn't suit me very well, much as I wanted it. So the AT it is!

thanks for the tip joolsburger

🙂

I was going to send mine to Chris Heal and then he said "Don't send it in the original big box as we have loads taking up space in the workroom".

but I don't have another box that is as secure and isn't as big 🙁
