I had a foot op last autumn which involved pinning my big toe joint (fusion). When I saw the specialist at Chritmas time he said he would take the screws out, under a local, in March, if they were causing pain, which they are. Now I know that he is the man with the answers, but before I go lining the BUPA pockets, I was wondering if anyone might have any experience of recovery time from this type of thing...... I am doing 10UTB in May and if I am going to be off the bike for maore than a week or 10 days I might put it off for a few months...

thanks

I take screws out of non joint bones and patients go about their normal busines almost immediately, can't imagine it would take at all long to recover

Same here. I had pins taken out my wrist and was back to full function within a week. I had a general and was glad as it took half an hour to find them and pull them out - screws should be easier mind.

No idea if feet are any more complicate though

I asked my GP about it, she reckoned they would just give me a local, small slice and in with the phillips screwdriver, job done !!!!

I guess I'll go see the specialist and see what he thinks.

Cheers

I had the bolts out of my hip under general. I'd asked to keep them as a momento.

When the surgeon brought them in he said 'sorry that ones a bit chewed up but I had to use some Mole grips to get it undone as I rounded the head off with the socket'. Clearly a bodger after my own heart.

He did cut all the old scar tissue out so I still only have one (slightly larger) scar now.

I recently had some pins and plates out of my ankle. They said I should be non-weight bareing for 2 weeks. I was on my road bike after a week! In hindsight it probably wasn't the best thing to do.. The scare split slightly but I super glued it up and was pretty much ok after that!

Things I would say are - keep it elevated as much as possible and keep on taking the anti inflammatories.

Even though they will only be taking screws out the fact they're poking round inside you means your body will react to it and swell up. From my experience though i'd say you'll be completely fine doing the ten under the ben in may if your having the screws out soon.

plate and 15 screws out my wrist, with the battering it go it took around 3-4 weeks to get the strength back, I would say its a case by case job and your recovery will only be as long as a. how easy it was to remove them, b. they dont crack a bone doing it c. no screws snap which is common! delay it if you want to be sure to ride!
