As the title. Looking for a family summer holiday somewhere hot. Unfortunately, it has to be during the school summer holidays. We quite fancy Turkey, but flights and self catering accommodation were totalling somewhere around £1200-1500 for Turunc. Should I just MTFU and accept these prices or are there any cheap but genuinely interesting places we can go for less money?
I'm under the impression that non-EU countries will likely offer better value for money, but am happy to be corrected on this.

Recommendations and/or places to avoid welcomed.

Pie.

Car isn't an option (I can't drive).

Cheap flight to the Greek islands + public transport + tent?

If you could drive you could certainly find nice places in France and spend less than that. 😐

We went to Serbia last year, four of us including flights, car hire and two nights in Belgrade (we went to the Tara national park for 9 days) cost less than a grand, and food and beer is incredibly cheap there.

Very undeveloped and not exactly a huge amount of stuff to do but we had a pool, a lovely lake to walk around, a nice neighbourhood restaurant and days out on steam trains etc, we just chilled out. The language was a bit of an issue, and we had a speaker in our group.

You may get somewhere leaving it late - you may not

my daughter and her mate went somewhere on the Costa Brava last year, the apartment cost them €6/night 😯
not for me though

as DS said, try getting flights to Malaga and then the coastal train [that leaves from the airport] to somewhere on the Costa del Sol - it stops at all the resorts as far as Fuengirola and is only €2.40

I reckon it can be done for £1K

Cheap flight to Geneva, Grenoble or chambery.
Bus to a ski resort.
Dirt cheap chalet as "out of season" prices.

I stayed in a beautiful chalet near Samoans for under £20 per night. Put a request in chalet world a week or 2 before you go and you'll easily find something.

Just come back from Spain after a week, did lyan air flights from east mids to malaga which were ok actually. Totalled £357 including three 15kg suitcases. Train to benalmedena €1.60 each/each way. Luckily for us our accomodation cost is a meal out and a soon to be delivered bottle of whiskey!!
One thing I would say is food/drink prices have dropped dramatically from when we were last there 4 yrs ago! Four of us ate out for late lunch with a drink each for the kids and 2 halfs of beer it totalled €23.
