So. Been here a few years.

One thing that hinders my enjoyment and use of the place is posting photos.

For example, I've just tried to post an image in the "what car do you drive thread"

I click "IMG" paste my Imgur or Google photos link in and.... Nope.

I read the board FAQ.

Am I missing a trick? Is there a definitive guide on how to post a meagre photo?

Tried to search the forum before posting.

Let me in the club. Pls.

Yeah.

Use https://postimages.org then use the direct link paste in here. Imgur is terrible is and Google images isn’t exactly forum friendly.

For posting an example of a pic in relation to a thread you need only search an appropriate pic, right click mouse button and select 'Copy image location'

then on your post click IMG and paste the link in there.
I think you need also click the 'prevent from creating further dialog' and hit submit.

Posting your own pics you need to use a pic hosting site or if youre on another forum like retrobike, which allows you to post pics direct from your own computer, you can use the copy image location link from there.

I've no idea why you cant upload direct from your own computer to this site, 99.999% of sites allow you to do this. STW is a rare beast in this aspect.

If it’s a recognised image such as .jpg or .gif you can just paste direct into the text box no need for the img box.

@olly2097

I used to use Postimage (and its perfectly ok) but for Google Photos I now use this site... It converts the Google rubbish that won't work in an IMG tag to a form that will. Why Google doesn't do this for you Lord only knows...anyway...

In Google Photos (on my android) go to the pic you want, click share icon, then "create link"... It copies it into the clip board.

Go to this site:

https://www.labnol.org/embed/google/photos/

Tell it your not a robot etc them paste the Google code into the box and click "generate". Once it's done "select all" the text from the box, then "copy".

Then just use it with the img tags on here. Done.

The key is to have a link the ends in ".jpg" or similar

If you have that then it is pretty simple, if it ends in something else then it is less likely work.

If I have an image I tend to right click and open in a new tab to check the URL

Easy from Imgur. Select copy permalink then just paste the text into the here. No need to use the img function.

It's because on a lot of image hosting sites, the link in your address bar when you are viewing the image is in fact a link to a page that simply has your image on it - along with a load of other things like other thumbnails, previous/next arrows, ads, etc etc.

The thing you need to paste into STW is the url of the actual image itself - which is what you are getting with the instructions above e.g. 'copy permalink' etc.

Labnol ^^ works good for Google pics - alternative workaround:

Open Google photo
Right-click on Google photo, select open in new window or tab
Right-click on Google photo in new tab/window, select Copy Image Address
Open tinyurl.com and shorten the address you have in your buffer
paste that tinyed url using the IMG button.
Fun 😛
Replicate that on a phone or other device? No clue - use postimage.org

right click mouse button

Id hazard a guess most don’t browse the site on a device with a mouse? More of a question than a statement.

imgur is really easy, i can post a pic on here within seconds.

upload the pic to imgur, click it and select the second from bottom option to copy (message boards and forums)

[img] [/img]

once copied, paste directly into stw reply box, no tags, nothing.

Right ..... I've been on here blooming years and have never really managed it.

On the basis I've nearly finished the garage/man cave and have a puppy on the way this thread has inspired me to sort myself out.

I'll try a test pic later this evening once at home.

vgy.me also good for image posting (you need to login, didn't used to). Once you've dragged or up-loaded an image from your PC or phone, the first thing it does is show you a direct link URL to stick in the clipboard and drop into the IMG tag here.

Of course a pain in the arse if the photo is already on the web - I only do that from a proper computer where I have IT witchery at my disposal.

Posting from Google Photos has always been a prick.

I use Imgur, it's as simple as right click / copy link. As others have said, if the URL ends with a valid image file extension (.jpg, .gif, .png) it'll work just by copying the text.

I’ve no idea why you cant upload direct from your own computer to this site

I was once told that it's a liability issue, STW is accountable for hosted content but not for linked content. Make of that what you will.

i thought it was cos uploaded photos from ourselves would take up space on stw storage, which would obviously cost a lot more than a direct hyperlink to a photo on someone elses storage. dunno how true that is, could be a mixture of the two maybe?
