Saw this on my ride today:

Any idea of the caterpillar responsible? Is it called a "nest" or does it have a more evocative term?

Looks like an eastern tent caterpillar (lappet moth)

Thanks for the suggestions; caterpillars of the brown tailed moth look to be the best match on location (Zummerset) & other pictures on the Internet.
Sadly, I only noticed it as I thought it was another hedgerow offering for the dog poop fairy and I'd gone over to collect it.

Careful, can be injurious to cycling! And yes, seems like they are brown tailed moth caterpillars - the red/orange spots at the tail. Just googled, appears you can get a nasty rash from them.
