Only to absolute pedants. Heard a guy on R4 last week, from I think the Oxford English dictionary or similar..... and the gist was less has been used in this context for hundreds of years now and on the basis that language evolves by how it's used rather than by a set of rules, if people have been saying '10 or less' for that long, it's correct usage.

1. RCA didn't say the story had to be true.
2. It is definitely fewer rather than less. There are many grammatical rules that are more guidelines than laws, particularly as regards the use of punctuation, but in the context of the sentence "You must write a story in ten words or less." less is simply the wrong word.
