Last time it was a horsefly that did my foot so badly I couldn't bend the foot to walk or cycle.
Yesterday I stopped at my usual point on a ride to sit under tree in the sun with a can of ginger beer to recharge. When I picked my backpack up I initially didn't realise a bee was on there.
That blissful ignorance only lasted seconds. Luckily when I swiped thethe little bugger off there was still a lot of venom in the sac, so I carefully pulled the sting out, swore at nature for a few seconds and then carried on riding home.
2:00am I wake up feeling not right to find the finger joint had swollen and I can't bend the bugger.
On with the hydrocortisone and it is starting look look just as angry but without the itching. That's guitar practise out the window for a couple of days then.
So 2 stings that both had a reaction that seems out of proportion to the event. Should I be looking at an epipen for the bike toolkit? 😳
For full own goal effect i should point out that I know the tree is full of bees. During summer lockdown i sat on the same bench a lot and saw three swarms over a few week period. D'Oh!

That look just very localised swelling hours later, also horseflies bite not sting so no you’re a long way off needing an epipen.

Looks and sounds like a normal bee sting to me. Without wishing to be flippant - shit happens, you're fine, just sit it out. I'm not a doctor but I understood that epi-pens are for people who are going into anaphylactic shock and going to die.

It might be worth including a pack of Growacet (TM).

More helpfully ... An epi-pen is not going to do anything for a bit of a sting or bite, if you genuinely feel your reactions are getting worse then by all means consult your GP but what you are describing isn't anything particularly unusual.

😀

This is the first bee (or wasp) sting I have had in 68 years on the planet. I've been munched on by horseflies and mosquitoes, a very minor scorpion sting and had a bunch jabs and things whilst snorkelling and they have never been quite a stupidly swollen as these last two incidents. Maybe I'm just generally run down.
Hey ho, who uses a back brake anyway?

Django Reinhart managed quite well with a couple of fingers.

Who else thought this was going to be a Planet X thread?

As someone who gets a bad reaction to stings and insect bites I generally carry some antihistamine cream with me when it's the season. Applying it immediately reduces any swelling and itchiness significantly.

Did your face or mouth begin to swell or feel any numbness? That’s the sure sign of anaphylaxis. I also get a hive of blisters on the inside of my arms and legs. Luckily I’ve only had jab myself once in the last 10 years.

If you've never been stung before then yeah you don't know what to expect. But it hurts like a bastard for a while and swells up like that. Worse than most other stings or bites you'll get in the UK for the first day, IME, but they go quicker.

You want to watch out for the next time, apparently, because that's the one that could trigger the allergic reaction .

Unusual to get stung without cause, was she on the can as you picked it up ?

Best to cover yourself in sugar and go back there, build up some tolerance.

It's silly season for the bees as they're just waking up, I had one that had somehow got in decide to take a swim in the dregs of my coffee at the weekend, fortunately I noticed they were moving before I took a swig, that would have been unpleasant, and my second ever sting, in the exact place where you don't want one if you're going to find out you're now properly allergic to them...

Pretty sure the bee is more pissed off about it than you are.

Me too!

Thats my understanding. Best get it over and done with while near emergency medical access just in case.

Try having a bee fly into your mouth and sting you right at the back of your throat. That's what happened to me on my recycling round last summer, certainly makes your eyes water and swear a lot. I couldn't get to the sting myself so ending up having to go to casualty after work to have some long forceps pushed a long way down my throat. Not quite as unpleasant as the sting but pretty grim.

Might be worth getting some antihistamines?

As said above, horse flies bite, not sting. There is no transference of venom. Any swelling or discomfort arising from that incident would have been down to an infection in the bite site.

I had one on my ankle years ago. Foot and lower leg looked like an elephant's foot. Not painful at all, but I had 2 days off work purely due to the fact i couldn't get a shoe on!

I’ve only been stung by a bee once, walking home from work, I thought I felt something in my hair, ran my fingers through then felt something like I’d had a cigarette stubbed out on my finger! The bee was clinging to the underside of my finger, clearly feeling threatened so stung. I flicked my hand and it disappeared, but left the sting and venom sac, still pulsing. Fortunately I used to carry a SAK, so got the tweezers out and carefully pulled it out.
It smarted for a bit...
But not as much as when I was hammering down a road in France with a bunch of others, wearing a long-sleeved top with the sleeves pushed up. I suddenly felt this intense pain in the crook of my right elbow, which kept repeating. I pushed the sleeve up, and saw something disappear - a wasp had got caught in the folds of the material, and stung me repeatedly in the same place, at least six, possibly seven times!
At least the bee only stings once.
That was incredibly painful, and my elbow ached for several weeks afterwards.

It was on the little loop handle on the top of my EVOC that had a bit of shopping in it. I lifted the bag up and must have squished the poor bugger. I'll give the doubt and call it self defence on the bees part.

I react really badly to bites and stings, ive been bitten twice within the last two years by horse fly's which became infected and my leg got so bad i couldnt actually put trousers on.
The first time i started feeling rough and spent the whole day in bed shivering until i phoned 111 and went to out of hours and they gave me some antibiotics.

The second time i recognised what was going on and went to see the docs early.

Proper puss filled boils on the side of my leg, i still have the scars.

I don't think I've ever been stung, but horseflies are evil little bastards. Me and my then-partner got mauled one day, dozens of bites each. No infections thank goodness, I healed quite quickly (I am highly experienced at lacerations) but my other half took months and months.

Just carry a normal pen so that you can draw a sad face on the bit that gets bitten/stung/licked by nature.

Oh and horseflies are utter ****s.

You can now compare your experiences to the the Schmitt Pain Index - the guy has made it his life's work to get stung by insects and describe the pain.

This thread is shocking. For once Perchy didn’t win the funniest comment on the thread award. Surely this does:

For all those interested by the Schmitt Pain Index, you may find the TV show Kings of Pain a fun watch.

I think it pops up on the History and Discovery channels, and is also avaialble on Amazon Prime.

There are some short clips on YouTube too. Here's a few to tickle your sadistic fancy...
