Going to be spending a week in and around Cheltenham with our 9 and 12 year old boys and looking for some ideas on what we can do. We've a day set out to visit Bourton on the Water for the Motoring and Toy Museum & Birdland but the rest of the time is pretty flexible.

Ideally the cheaper the better, and any good parks/adventure playground type areas will go down a treat

Forest of Dean? Malvern hills? If you're here over this weekend the excellent and free Stroud fringe festival is on.
Also Cattle county (massive adventure playground, brilliant) and Berkeley Castle are near, and not too expensive.
If the weather is good Cheltenham lido for a swim.

Cheltenham's lovely. Some ideas:

Pittville Park has a big adventure playground (and is a pleasant place to spend a morning/afternoon/picnic). There's bits of it both sides of the Evesham Road, via a tunnel.

Cleeve Hill and Leckhampton Hill; again, great for a picnic and/or walk, ace views over town and beyond. Cleeve Hill has the Rising Sun pub with cracking views from its beer garden

Trip out to Cotswold Farm Park, of Adam Henson of Countryfile fame (can't imagine that's dead cheap though)

There's an outdoor pool/lido near the hospital, supposed to be very nice

Day out to the Forest of Dean, follow the sculpture trail or just wander around (and even hire bikes)

That's a good point, the free Phoenix Festival is on in Cirencester this weekend too, plus Cirencester is worth a trip too anyway (nice market town, playground in the Abbey Grounds, walking in Cirencester park, Corinium Museum has loads of Roman stuff and will have activities on for the summer holidays)

Park up next to GCHQ and start saying words like "bomb" and "victims" and see how long it takes for them to come and get you? ๐Ÿ˜€

If going over to Malvern stop off at Upton upon severn,Lovely little town also festival/show on this weekend.
Take a trip on the old railway from the racecourse upto Toddington.
Clearwell caves in the FOD.
The docks at Gloucester good for food/shopping/walk around.
The haunted churchyard at prestbury (Night times better).

Take a trip on the old railway from the racecourse upto bourton on the water.

The railway's good, but goes to Toddington, not Bourton
