I have this irrational desire to replace my old trusty Mondeo with a gas guzzling 4x4.....

....apart from saying "don't do it...", which of course could be very good advice, has anyone got experience running a BMW X5 4.4 or similar....

....whilst the fuel costs are high, the purchase prices are low at the mo; I'm looking at a 4.4i 2005 with 60K miles for under £10k and the road tax is only £260 as it's earlier than 2006. Hence I'm interested, particularly as i get 45p/mile through work.....

Thoughts anyone??

Depends on your mileage.

I drive a 4.2 RS6 and a tank fill is £110 at 20mpg if driven like Miss Daisy. Your 45p a mile just about covers fuel, let alone tyres/ insurance etc.

That said big engines are great and put a big smile on your face 🙂

Mr Mule Senior swears by his diesel Landrover Freelander.

Of course, sometimes he swears at it - such as the time the silly git put about a hundred quids worth of unleaded in it....

Subaru Forester. Seriously sorted and fun.

Miss mine. Three riders refused to ever get into a car with me again after experiencing my driving in mine...

Its also not blown money. Very capable pratical vehicles. 30mpg+ on a 2.5T petrol. None of the pap 30mpg diesel wheezing..

I ran a 3 litre diesel for 3 years from new.

Average fuel was 27MPG which given the weight isn't too bad. Running costs are high with one service north of £2k which was 4 tyres, rear brake pads and the usual oil and filters.

Build quality isn't as good as it once was and given the complexity of the management systems it's beyond your back street garages which leaves main stealers or your local specialist. while under warranty I have had a few issues fixed but im not sure about extended dealer warranties. If i was buying second hand i would try and get one of these in place if possible. Or at the very least a full service history. 60k miles is nothing on a modern engine. I ran a Audi A4 to just under a quarter of a million miles before the gear box expired. Chopped it at a dealers who disposed of it through a local auction house, the next thing I know is i get a call from trading standards enquiring about the mileage as a local south wales dealer had clocked the car.

They are fantastic cars but it comes at a cost.

BTW I have a BMW two bike cycle rack for sale if your interested!

spend the money on something useful like a car and a bike. Then the money you will save every month will pay for another bike very shortly.

Or try them ads in your spam box if you feel the need to grow another couple of inches and throw your money away.

If you are considering this purchase I urge you to do so as soon as possible.

Starbucks have since come to appreciate the error of their ways and after agreeing to pay more tax are basking in waves of adoration...

Please, for the sake of the nation, buy this car, in full knowledge that you will be shortening the time to return to a profitable national economy.

£10k is too much, should be able to get OPEC specials for far less.

As long as you realise that a £60k car still costs big money, even if you only paid pennies for it.

My 535i had already lost £40k when I bought it, cost me 48ppm over 5 years and 40k. Downshifted to a 3.0i V6, paid £1k and it had already depreciated £31k, currently at 39ppm (and fuel is 25ppm of that).

A friend had the 4.4i, make sure its got decent history and a recent set of tyres.

Many years ago an independent garage offered to leand us their courtesy car while they did some work on Mrs Gti's car. They took me outside and proudly showed me... a knackered old 3 series BMW. I had to endure the shame of driving around in a BMW for several hours, I kept away from my neighbourhood in case anybody saw me; I went to a supermarket, bought a paper and sat for a couple of hours until they called me back to pick up our own car. When I got home I had to take a long hot shower and even now I find it difficult to admit that I drove a BMW. Ugh! The shame!

Why oh why would you do such a thing.

If you must have a 4x4 something diesel that's capable of proper 4x4 stuff seems more logical. If you want big engine petrol vehicle the previously mentioned 3.0 bmw wagons would be more the thing or an A8 for something big with 4wd. If you are used to Mondeo running costs that will be a big enough shock to your wallet!

Something I heard recently "if you are thinking of a BMW X-whatever, you should probably spend half as much on a decent German estate and spend the rest on the therapy you clearly need.
On the other hand, Porsche Cayenne look pretty cheap too. what could possibly go wrong!!

Some of the comments on here are priceless, there really are some very irrational immature people on here.

7 year old BMW is going to start to cost you though at some point soon so be prepared for that, have you looked at the cost of tyres for example? If its your daily car then trips go the petrol station are going to start to really piss you off. As the owner of a vehicle with a 4.8l v8 engine there is no way I'd want to be putting big miles on it.

Why do you want one, willy waving credentials, fine go ahead taking into account costs as mentionned above, if you want a 4 x 4 for better driving in the snow etc. dont't, get a CRV / Freelander / Forester / Jimny / anything but a BMW or Porsche instead.

Why all the questions about, "why" and the comments re driving facts and figures?

That is missing the point entirely. No one buys a Rolex watch to tell the time. Ditto <1% of 4x4 drivers buy them for anything to do with their actual design and the manufacturers not very well. IT IS ALL ABOUT willy-waving. In snow, a 2 wheel drive car with winter tyres will outperform most/many 4x4s with normal tyres, as yesterday's papers confirmed. But that won't stop people buying under the excuse, well last winter we got stuck in the snow......!

9/10 its a sub optimal choice - but it's whatever swings your bucket. The marketing men, petrol suppliers and BMW after service staff wil be delighted if you chose the BMW.

Why do you want a 4x4, and what do you intend to do with it?

The reason i ask is -
If you like the idea of the security 4 wheel drive gives you on the road then why not look at some big 4x4 estates, or smaller less lux 4x4s (Jap stuff)
If you actually intend to use the 4 wheel drive off road, then it is a different story.
If you want seriously rugged it is all about big Toyota/Nissan models if you want big/4x4/lux then you are looking at Merc M-class, BMW X5/ Audi Q-class.

I'm also hoping to get back into 4x4 ownership soon, but I want it for proper off-road adventure stuff (went to Africa twice in my old Landys) so I'll be looking at a big Toyota/Nissan Patrol or maybe Landrover.

DOn't forget that a car that cost 50k new, costs the same to look after 7 years down the line as it did when new, unless you are handy with the spanners.

If I were going down that route I think I would get an old V8 Range Rover with LPG conversion. Probably a very old one at that 😉

I would kinda agree with a lot of these comments on running costs. I am finding that the tyres on my - admittedly small and not really offroady Mitsubishi Outlander - are lasting about 20k and are £160 a corner for not particularly flash ones.

For proper rufty tufty stuff I would probably go with a Patrol/Landcruiser and an oldish one. For what I do I am probably going to go back to pickups one day... when I have moved somewhere I can actually park one... as they are pretty much designed for the job I do and the terrain I cross!

Though I am waiting to see what the Defender replacement is going to be like too!

As a non car driver and having to share narrow rural roads with 4x4 the majority of which are driven by people who will not move on to the grass verge in case they get mud on there car and therefore will never need it off road, then all I can say to you is NOB HEAD.........But then I am biased!!
PS also my ice tyres will probably work better on ice than a 4x4.

The concept of buying a big ole 4x4 isnt flawed

Its the bmw aspect that is , they were not much cope as a 4x4- its funny watching them round here in snow

Tbf could be changed by swapping tires

Our golf died last week . Want to replace it with a discovery ( yes i know this is probably a crazy move) but not right now as snow tax is silly !

Trying to wait till spring

if you like the X5 but one, get teh 4.4 big engine model cos they are cheap second hand becuase everyone is scared of petrol prices

then get a lpg conversion put on it - then you will be aking money being paid 45ppm

also look at doing something similar with a large petrol engined Jeep like the 4.7 hemi in the grand cherokee

If I could get my license back and realy did want a vehicle I would have one of these
http://www.polaris.com/en-us/ranger-utv/utility-vehicle/ranger-xp-900-sage-green/build
With windows and doors but robbing b**tards charge 14,000 grand in UK
or better still if you can take the rear seats out
http://www.polaris.com/en-us/ranger-utv/6-seater/ranger-crew-diesel/features Again doors and windows.
Easier than pulling a trailer full of wood on my bicycle
no tree would be safe from me!!

So much jealousy and hatred on this thread, and the OP isn't even buying a new one!

And some common sense too.

Oil prices will continue to rise, any fall will be offset by the increase in Tax on emissions and fuel (both the same really)
A cheap 4x4 with a massive engine may have low lifetime wear/tear/purchase cost but by the time you have filled up for the second time in a week it's going to get painful. What happens when fuel is heading towards 2quid/l
Most of the fashion 4x4's have stupid tyres that will leave you stranded in a wet car park. Fit anything decent and add a 3rd trip to the petrol station per week.

I've got a 2001 Nissan Patrol. It's only 3 litres, but with a turbo and ic. Can't remember what torque it develops now, I did research it when I bought but have forgotten since. Sometimes I live in the country, it can wade a fairly deep puddle, I've never been stuck in mud or snow, it's an AWESOME tow car, it's massive - I wanted something that would outweigh my caravan by a significant margin - as someone wrote on here the other week, it's so big it has its own gravity. It does between 5 and 6.5 miles to a litre depending on how I'm driving/if I'm towing or not. It's gorgeously comfy - you can drive all day and get out the other end fresh as a daisy, hardly any wind or road noise in the cabin.

Well my CR-V performed admirably today running around Gisburn forest on the fire roads, coped well with the sheet ice and mud (which it is now covered in), two wheel barrows in the back plus tools, wouldn't have wanted to do that in our VW Touran, even with the all season tyres fitted (the CR-V has much better ground clearance for a start).

All season tyres on the Touran have made a huge difference in the snow and slush the last couple of days though, stuff it normally would have been stuck dead in, it sailed up. I've noticed a slight drop in fuel consumption but nothing to worry about.

I seriously wonder if all the nobs who spout the company line about willy waving and penis extensions actually have really small nobs and are secretly harbouring penis envy themselves.

If you want one, get one - just don't ask the opinion of the faux hippies and yoghurt knitters on here. You might as well ask a fox if you should buy a foxhound and a horse.

Anyway, back in the world of sensible answers - (not discarding your desire for an X5), have you considered a V6 tdi VW Touareg?

Loving my murano v6, pick one up from a nissan dealer with a cared 4 warranty. Will give you the big engine, 4x4 you are after but with a good warranty. The lack of the prestige badge makes them v good value. We use ours to tow and it will pull a small village!

If your looking for something for actual off roading, remember that dif locks and sealed axels with breather pipes may come into there own. With out dif lock you can end up in real trouble if even 1 wheel starts to spin.

If its more for the fact you like the big cars a 4x4 then go for it with the kind of age and price your looking at if you run it for a year and decide its not your thing or it is costing to much you wont loose much when it comes to selling it.

but as has been said look into the foresters/allroads/volvo xc's if its just for road use.

I'd have the latest shape X5 if I could afford one. Early one looks a bit dated now.
Re: the 4.4 engine though...nah, not for me.

They must make them differently for the UK market, because pretty much every GU Patrol I've driven out here in OZ (and there have been many) have made a Defender appear refined and sporty
