Really starting to take effect here on the Welsh Boarders. Was rainy until about 6:30pm but loads were f snow now down already and high winds
Worst bit is no satellite single now so Sky not working ☹️
Sounds like Cornwall is getting hammered
I‘m near Stratford Upon Avon.
We had rain all afternoon then snow from 18:00 until 20:00. Since then the snow has stopped and it’s starting to defrost!
The winds picking up too, I wonder what we will wake up to tomorrow :o)
Cancelled my Friday train to London this morning 45 mins of haggling to get my full refund . Partner got her refunded within 5 mins, I can be a grumpy bast when computer says NO
Take care folks, Red warnings aren’t given likely.
It's horrendous for those down in the red zone from news reports.
MrsMC and daughter were in London today to see a couple of shows, catching the last train back to Derby. I told them to take toothbrushes and a change of underwear in case they had to stay in London.
They left the evening show in the interval and caught an earlier train back, but are now stuck with some other vehicles about 5 miles from home. We've had 2-3 inches of snow but seems they can't get through.
They are warm and safe and together with other cars in a layby, so told me not to risk getting stuck trying to reach them, which is probably sensible but feels wrong to just go to bed and try and sleep.
Last named storm MrsMC got stuck in Glasgow overnight when flights got cancelled. She does it deliberately I'm sure.
Wish the BBC would sense check its reporting of Storm Goretti. Article is talking about issues caused by weather in the South West, channel Islands, Wales and the Midlands - fair enough. Then chucks in that a tree fell on a car on the A877 travelling to Edinburgh. The A877 is 4 hours north west of Edinburgh and no where near any weather linked to Goretti. Aaargh. Rant over.
Nowt here in Scottish Borders. All we've had was a light dusting of snow and a bit of frost. No wind. It's just a touch chilly.
Stay safe everyone, Red warnings should mean a duvet day.
The dampest of squibs in the NW
I expected a blanket of thick snow and got breezy rain.
Dang
Deep snow and no power here in South Shropshire. We are at 240m up in the Shropshire hills so always cop it when there is snow about. Very high winds overnight but they've abated a bit. The power started going on and off around tea time yesterday then stayed off from around 11pm. Our old cottage is absolutely Baltic. Currently getting wrapped up to go out to an outbuilding and hunt in the dark for a jetboil, so we can have a brew. Then the "evil" log burner is getting lit!
Very disappointed here in North Shropshire.
Probably 4” of snow but it’s melting rapidly already, no wind, and the TV is working again
It all started a bit mad here but unfortunately not the 1ft of snow hoped for
Slightly breezy and wet here in the South Cotswolds. Nothing to write home about.
we are lucky here in devizes wilts no storm at all not even wind (just some light rain earlier).
Currently getting wrapped up to go out to an outbuilding and hunt in the dark for a jetboil, so we can have a brew.
Jetboil brew and MSR pocket rocket porridge! I've got a big 2 ring camping stove, but I forgot the elbow joint leaks and I've been meaning to replace it. Bugger!! It would have been really useful today!
Discovered the fence on our chicken run has collapsed under the weight of the snow, snapping the supporting poles. It's the outer run, we have a secure inner run so they are safe from predators for the time being.
Always handy having camping kit to hand if you have storm power issues. That said, in South Manchester we miss all the bad stuff, and we've never had power cuts from weather issues.
From the BBC web site:
"We’ve got some official snow depths from Met Office weather stations after the overnight snow from Storm Goretti.
16cm - Lake Vyrnwy, Powys
8cm - Nottingham
7cm - Sennybridge, Powys
3cm - Shawbury, Shropshire
2cm - Coleshill, Warwickshire
However, official snow observations are quite limited across the UK, so this perhaps doesn’t give the full picture of the snow situation this morning."
It's all a bit crap given the hype, especially compared to what Scotland has been dealing with!

I saw two meteorologists "weather presenters" live on YouTube getting all excited answering all the incoming questions like Xmas day kids but constantly just repeating the same old stuff but one thing why in one sentence have two inches of rain with strong wind near the coast but 3cm of snow falling for others
Why do we need centimetres for snow, who ever uses cms?
All a bit something or nothing in the East Cheshire Alps. We normally cop whatever's coming, as we're 300m up and in a weird little weather micro-pocket, and it snowed 'reasonably' yesterday evening (enough for me to come back from Scouts a bit early). When I got home at 9pm there was about 2 inches and it was steadily snowing. Took the dog out for a pee about an hour later and there was maybe another inch, still snowing. Woke up this morning and it's all basically slush already.
Everyone born after 1960.
I'm a 1974-born whippersnapper, spent my entire schooling being taught in metric, and I still use imperial for rough approximations of length.

1969 here and snow still measured in inches, so 2-3" here.
The LadiesMC spent the night in a layby with blankets and extra layers, and got home an hour ago. A Fiesta with sporty tyres probably the wrong car for them to take yesterday but they were prepared enough, and pulled off the road to park up before they got stuck on the road like quite a few others.
Will try and clear the driveway this afternoon, it should start melting a bit soon.

Well you've chosen the right unit for rough estimates. 👍
Thoughts and prayers...
Why do we need centimetres for snow, who ever uses cms?
I think it’s actually a much better measure than inches. “Inches of snow” is invariably a massively exaggerated number - an inch of snow usually means 2cm or less! A couple of inches could be 3cm, and 6 inches is often actually 10cm! “A foot” is usually 15cm. If I was being forgiving I’d say it’s because nobody actually uses inches for anything important. Of course you can exaggerate cm or mm too but the greater precision potentially leads you towards a more realistic number.
People still use inches??
Trains messed up so WFH day for me!
It does feel a bit like this today as the press fall over themselves to show 1cm of snow being cleared from a windscreen and a few branches down....
When I hear anyone using centimetres i think of primary school teachers, Blue Peter and sticky backed plastic BBC tossers
Metric is the best by far but mm and m is all we need

This Nottingham resident can see precisely zero anywhere. It just rained
Loving the gatekeeping of any snow talk from "north of the wall". You make Python's 4 Yorkshiremen sound like rank amateurs! 🤣 😛 😉

As the resident metrologist, I love to see the mix of units in the same description - 300m up and got 2 inches of snow.
Also weirdly, if you'd opted for imperial for both, you wouldn't dream of using the imperial equivalent to the metre - no-one lives at 330 yards up, it's 1000 feet.
No snow in Surrey although a bit wet and windy.
Can confirm, it was blowy af last night here in Cornwall. At one point, looked like the Blitz on the horizon as (presumably) power transformers and/or cables were blowing up/coming down all over the place.
My brother is on the Portsmouth Santander ferry . It left at 8am.
Is it going to be rough?
Its weird here in the East Lancs hills where, as my daughter puts it, we usually get 'a lot of weather'. Not only have we had no snow but the wind turbines across the valley are all static as there isn't a breath of wind out there. Weird! That only happens about 3 days a year. They put them there for a bloody good reason.
Just windy and grotty on the plain down here but snowy in the mountains 🙂 Went for a swim in the outdoor pool and enjoyed a massage from rain on anything not in the water.
People still use inches??
Yup even in France. Car and bike wheel sizes, Guitar diapason and neck radius, loud speaker sizes, water and oil drilling equipment... .
Just back from a 10km run. Air temps -7c.
∆∆∆∆ that looks properly grim.
People still use inches??
Only with MrsEpic, and she usually responds with underwhelmed cm in the same way Poly is underwhelmed with snow depth
That ferry, and those wave charts.
One of my Christmas presents was membership of the RNLI, after I was in awe on holiday last summer at the story of the Penlee lifeboat and visiting the Sennen station
The RNLI webpage has latest launch info so I'm in awe at Falmouth launching last night, in the dark, into low temperature and 90 knot winds, under volunteers. Incredible people

Respect is due there, for sure.
Why do we need centimetres for snow, who ever uses cms?
I do, and I was born in 1954. Working for many years in print and publishing, metric was universal for paper sizes, but then you have points, ems and ens for text. I use whatever measurement system makes most sense to me, so mostly miles, but occasionally kilometres, pints, gallons etc make more sense to me than litres, but then litres make more sense for engine capacity. 🤷🏼♂️
Still loads of snow around here , but now it’s that soft horrible mush with ice beneath. Lots of small local trees down more from the weight of snow than wind
Llandegla has been closed for days now
Still loads of snow around here
Looking from Chester towards the Clwyds I can still see some snow but guess it's on it's way out for now. The Capel Curig/Carnedd Llewelyn area looked pretty spectacular in the sun from West Kirby yesterday.
People still use inches??
I only use tabloid-approved units of measurement... olympic swimming pools, football piches, double-decker buses and how many times something will go round the world if placed end-to-end
