I've just spent 2 days in hospital as a result of the big belly bash two weeks ago.
I was admitted to the surgical assessment unit via A&E. Yesterday the surgeon drained (aspirated) an abdominal haematoma and drew off about 500ml of blood and detritus using the biggest syringe I've ever seen. It was of cartoon proportions and I watched every bit being slurped out of my belly. At least it broke the monotony of a hospital stay!
I was very well looked after and I must say that the precautions to prevent infection (MRSA) were thorough and confidence inspiring.
Three cheers for the staff of Hope Hospital in Salford.
DS
Glad to hear you're doing ok. Must have been scary there for a while.
Take it easy and hopefully you'll be back on the bike soon enough.
So you should have gone back before then?
Don't understand it when people don't heed warnings on the internet! 😉
Glad you are ok/better now.
You out for a blast tomorrow then? Woot, Hill of a Thousand Deaths, Dog Sprint etc... I'm trying to wangle a pass. 😉
Keep yourself nice mate. I'll see you at work when you are fit or I could pop round with the toddler and let him jump on you.
Starship update
Captain's Log. Stardate: 254...point 57.. 3.. alpha .. 4 point 1.
After sustaining a... grievous injury.. on an... away mission. I have returned to the Enterprise where Dr McCoy has... removed a.. strange alien being from my... abdominal cavity.
Glad you're feeling a better derek!
Glad to hear your o.k. Derek - sense of humour intact etc 😀
So with all the blood and gunk removed how much *ahem weight have you lost off the bike?!!
After all this, my lovely wife REALLY hates my MTB.
Is CX generally safer as a change of discipline is in mind...
Glad you're ok, those pics were grim!
Your wife is just worried about her cuddly bear getting hurt and anger aimed at the other lady (bike).
Rest up and get better soon.
I think you should send your bruise pics to some cycle magazine and win something etc.
LOL@GrahamS nicely done but where was Spock?
Futurama has the best starship log update:
Zapp: Captain's Log, stardate... uhh...
Kif: (exasperated sigh) April thirteenth!
Zapp: April thirteenth... point two.
Is CX generally safer as a change of discipline is in mind...
Imagine doing our local ride 5-10 mph faster but with no suspension and crap brakes. You'll love it.
Sign yourself up for a skills day. All your wrecks are low speed tumbles not high speed stupidity.
Don't listen to the wife...glad to hear you are on the mend...although if you decide to listen to the wife then clearly you also suffered a severe trauma to the head as well!
Mrs Starship here.
The bike is on the furnace as we speak...............
Just heard that Neil (Derek) is back in hospital. I will keep the masses informed.
Just letting you know Neil is waiting for a CT scan tomorrow (hopefully!) The haematoma is back and when I visited him this evening looked worse than last night when he was admitted.
Docs don't think there is any infection, he's not doing too bad but until he's had the scan it's worrying. I know he's better off being in hospital and getting it checked out.
Will let you know on here or via Harry_the_Spider how he's getting on
Marina
(Mrs Starship) 😀
I reckon that Derek deserves a new bike. That should speed his recovery 😆
Healing vibes to the starship. Get well soon fella
Get well soon.
I broke my finger once - well not broke it - crushed it - in a fixed wheel kids bike - I was only 8...anyway as a reward for not crying during the operation I got a new bike - result!
I reckon if Derek gets out the hospital and doesn't tell you to stop fussing about his biking then he deserves a new bike...in fact, which hospital is in he so I can send him some biking mags to allow him to make his choice...
I'm sure he will be fine once they have finished their tests to get the right treatment for him...clearly it will tkae time to recover so mke sure he doesn't do anything THAT daft whilst in recovery...but make sure he gets himself a new bike as a reward for his 'mis-'adventure (and entertaining us!).
Get well soon Derek, am thinking we are going to be needing an STW rehabilitation division to bring the injured troops back up to speed.
as a reward for not crying during the operation I got a new bike - result!
best bit was you were under a general anaesthetic 😉
Text from our Derek…
He is currently in hospital being force fed radioactive Pernod in preparation for his scan on Thursday. They will shortly be transferring him to a urology ward where he is looking forward to spending time with catheterised pensioners and men with giant prostates.
He sums up his mood with one word…
Cock.
radioactive Pernod
Mmmmm... spicy!
Get well soon Derek (Neil).
Wish him well from me Harry.
He needs something to look forward too when he comes out Mrs Starship.
A new bike is one suggestion.....
Im disappointed, I thought this was a thread about the new NASA rocket 🙁
He sums up his mood with one word…Cock.
Is it wrong to laugh? sorry.
Sounds like a nasty experience all round tho - very unpleasant - Hope it all gets sorted
Had my daily texts from Neil
To summarise :-
1) The nurses all have big arses.
2) The bloke in the bed next to him looks like a former colleague and his nipples are “killing” him.
3) Everybody is talking freely and openly about wee.
4) The chap in the bed opposite would appear to be hooked up to a bag of cider and blackcurrant.
Today’s mood summed up as “It’s f###ing crazy man”.
Good luck to derek and marina (funny I hope mrs starship is not "my" marina...)
What bike is the bike how much you want for it 😉
The chap in the bed opposite would appear to be hooked up to a bag of cider and blackcurrant.
You can do that?
Its lager actually, not cider!
Blimey.......
Can't really think of anything else to say other than no DIY for at least 6 months until fully recovered, plenty of fresh air and exercise, all lager to be sans blackcurrant because only runners would ever drink crap like that. May need to consider a much improved top end full suss type wheel chair, you know one of the smart new ones with a wheel at each end for improved manouverability, (soz not available on the NHS, but I believe big discounts avaialble via the Bike to Work Scheme, which is I believe the inline wheelchair division of Motability).
No no Mrs,D.S. no need to thank me, like you I just want to see Derek back in the saddle .....<ahem> bosom of his family soonest.
Love and Hugs..... (While hes not at home obviously)
Doctor Bandit
