Am I on dodgy ground here suggesting that indoor fixed cycling can help winter fitness or am i going to be burnt at the stake of MTFU?
There are very good with the right instructor, if they start doing silly exercises on the bike - leave
I did a couple at the gym just to see what they were like and it was hard!
Like jota says, I was less impressed when they got us doing push ups on the bike
yup, 2 mornings a week. no matter how much time i take off the real bikes whenever i do get out with people again i'm never lagging behind and the base level of fitness means i seem to always finish the climbs before others.

Perfect advice ^ Some of the instructors will make it very bike specific others will have you doing all sorts of weird positions and over choreographing the class which I never liked. If there are a range of classes and instructors at your local gym try them all over a couple of weeks before deciding which one(s) you prefer. I used to do three a week in the winter, one was very sprint focussed, one was all about longer measured efforts and the third fell somewhere between the two.
The best instructor rarely used the bike he would just move around the class beasting people individually.
With the right instructor and a willingness to bury yourself you can get the most intense 45-60 minute bike workout this side of outrunning a hungry lion through Epping Forest.
Cheers chaps I have just signed up so will see how it goes, I have never tried anything like this in my 47 years!
Very dependant on the instructor. Don't be afraid to ramp up the resistance.
You can take your SPD shoes at most of them.

That could be good as i have a redundant pair I didn't look at the pedals, they are brand new bikes though
Yep normally double sided pedals. flat with straps on one side, shimano compatible clip-ins on the other.
Very dependant on the instructor.
To a large extent, but another big motivator is the peer pressure - you don't want to be seen slacking in front of the class. It can be a very intense workout and a good way of spending a wet lunch hour. Not sure it does much for your cycling technique but I found it certainly helps with fitness.
I've done a lot over the years both here and abroad. Couple of points... it is important to set the bike up how your own bike is, not how they tell you in the class, otherwise you risk some knee damage. Also the environment is usually warm and gets warmer so take a heart-rate monitor to make sure you are working at the right level. Thirdly take a towel to drape over the bars and clean the machine afterwards. The exercises that some classes do can really helping core strength which is key to climbing ability so get stuck into those as well.
There is a massive range of quality. Different classes focus on different things, ask yourself do you really want to be stuck at the back of a class, of 21 year old women chatting, bobbing along to music 😯
Cheers Fantom

Is this a trick question?

God, that sounds awful. 🙁
the best bits out about spinning is the 21 yr old girls, that's why you get a bike at the back but to the side so then you get down low you can pretend to be looking up at your screen but actually you're staring at all the booooooobies.
I had heard that the ladies get benefits from the saddles too! 😀
