A guy from work posted this picture, it doesn't look like your average spider to me, can anyone tell me what it is? (Bit of a long shot I know)[img] [/img]

Looks like a Scotophaeus/Herpyllus blackwalli aka a Mouse Spider

Edit: they can have a nasty bite, apparently 😯

How big is it? Is that photo takes with a big macro lens and the beastie is actually only a few mm's across, or is it a big 4 inched? The size would depend on if I would take the humane approach in dealing with it, or take the size 9 approach.

It's a camera phone, he went to get something to catch it but it had bolted by the time he got back, if it was in my house the missus would freak, scared of everything.

Shouldn't that be in different country where it can't bite me?

A spider that looked very similar to that bit me on the end of my finger once when i picked it up to throw it outside. It left me with two bleeding pin pricks.

It didn't live long after that.

Haha nice one eskay, hope there's no spiders on the other side. This should defo be in another country so it can't bite us Mosey.
I'm pondering whether or not to show the missus who already wakes up through the middle of the night convinced there are spiders above us on the roof......I love when she wakes me up to tell me that.

Parkesie's ugly critter may not technically be a spider, but it's still an arachnid, which, as far as I'm concerned, makes it a bloody spider, to all intents and purposes, and I'm damned glad that they live in dry and arid climates: bugger finding something like that, 6" across, scrabbling around in the bath, or scuttling across the floor while you're watching telly!
Watch me scream like a girl and run for the hills...

Ya great Jessie 😉

Yes it is mostly a spider, and it is kinda scary. I didn't elaborate due to being in the bath.

Ya great Jessie

Yup! I normally manage the traditional stiff upper lip, and stoic, manly demeanour, but faced with something like that, and I would have no option but to run away!
And that shiny, furry black thing of ecm's is running a close second place, too. Especially as the little bugger bites!
Sod that for a game of soldiers!

That wee beastie had a dozen soldiers standing on chairs as it ran across infront of the tv.

The spider from the op does look like a Scotophaeus blackwalli. It can be called a mouse spider but shouldn't be confused with the wiki mouse spider info. Mouse spiders also live in the Americas and Asia. Some of these have quite strong venom and are similar to trap door spiders. The uk one is fine, though it's fangs can puncture skin.
Solifugae are fascinating things. They don't have venom but do have double jointed mouth parts which means they can bite sideways and up and down at the same time. I had a European one which could play dead for hours and then suddenly jump up running. Great little things.
