Am looking for a good piece of s/w or maybe a book that's going to get results because I have so much stuff to read/absorb these days. Did loads of Googling last night but most links are either very cheesy or a bit scammy.

get down to your local library and get a book. The learning technique is looking at 2/3 words together instead of each word at a time. With practise this becomes sentences then paragraphs then pages.
However it takes time and lots of practise to really develop it to the extent that a page is taken in at a glance.
