Looking for some gas struts for my garden tool sheds lift up lid. Looked at different sites but really not sure what size or strength I'd need.
Lid size is 1200mm wide, probably not far off 20-25kg, looking for about 1m lift up needed.
Any help appreciated.
as a starting point in your search, these gas struts came as standard with my Asgards

No idea I'm afraid but a piece of 2 x 1 timber cut to length will do the job - much cheaper and unlikely to break. 😉
(25kg sounds an awful lot for a piece of blow moulded polyethylene!)
^^ This indeed.
The 'strength' of the struts you'll need will surely depend on the position of the anchor point on the lid? The closer to the hinge end, the greater the effective weight they need to hold up, so it's rather hard for anyone to predict what you require. I found like-for-like struts for a Keter bin store on eBay a few years ago, probably by searching for the part number.
It's 12mm ply, 1200 x 2400 with felt on top and edging timber. So 20kg and a bit.
I have currently got bits of cls to hold it open but was looking for something to assist lifting it so Mrs wookie can also open it. I'm guessing the longer the better, min 200N, (10N per kg lift)
It was the leverage Im struggling with a bit. Yes shorter struts closer to the hinge would need to be higher strength, but I wondered if there was a rule of thumb to it? Is it longest you can fit, short is ok, or somewhere in the middle is best?
Ta.
Start with where it's convenient to fit the mounts, get an open and closed length. If it's to assist lifting you'll want to make sure the mounts relative to the pivot are pushing it open rather than over center and holding it closed.
Once you've got an open length, some basic trigonometry to work out what force you need to hold it open (or put a set of scales under a stick where you want the mounts). I'd probably oversize it by 20%.
That'll give you a starting point, catalogues will have a range of open/closed and force.
I'm sure I've seen a calculator on one of the suppliers websites but can't find it.

ahhh 👍

If that was mine and and there was something solid behind it (i.e. a wall) I'd probably set up a two or three to one rope purchase to pull it up - but I've got plenty of bits of rope, blocks, etc!
I can't help but, am I the only person reading this thread's title to the tune of a Prodigy song?

It was in my head. 🙂
When I was working I had to spec a strut for a one off bit of industrial kit. As mentioned above, the force does depend on the mounting point locations, so you can do the sums. I seem to remember that the one I used was adjustable, you could let out a bit of the gas to reduce the force. This was one way, so you had to be careful you didn't let out too much. Pretty sure I got it from RS.
