Not quite sure how I feel about this one (after having a bit of a giggle about it).

Is it the same, worse than or better than going as Dexter? A vampire? A "wicked" witch. His mum, a primary school teacher surely should have known it might not go down too well. I realise an 11 year old might be quite independently minded but surely you'd try and get him to think better of wearing the costume to school, complete with cable-ties and an eye-mask as props. 😆

What do we reckon? Inappropriate? Acceptable?

How has this made national news?

When the teachers had finished laughing, they should have had a quiet word with the mum, end of.

I realise this is probably the most shocking thing about this story, yes. 🙂

Bit of an odd one this, for sure.

My first reaction was 'what's the problem?'. But then I thought about the fact that it's related to naughty hanky panky carry-on and thought it a bit inappropriate.
Then thought, well is that intrinsically worse than going as other 'naughty', 'bad' characters in a book??

Not sure I'd be comfortable sending my child (if I had one) dressed up as that bloke, but probably wouldn't bat an eyelid if he was dressed up as a vampire. Weird.

On a similar note - Radio2 played 'rock star' by Nickelback this morning and censored the line "drugs come cheap", so it was ".......come cheap". But they didn't censor the preceeding line "Girls come easy"
So, the song went: "The girls come easy and the ...... come cheap", which I thought was a bit odd. basically Radio 2 are saying it's fine to label women as 'easy' but you can't mention that drugs are available cheaply. I almost complained.

Oh the shame...I've duplicated a post on the other "what are you wearing tomorrow" thread. 😳 🙁 This is possibly even more shocking than it making national news.

Happy for this one to be closed modz, or leave it open if you think it deserves a separate discussion.

I don't even really understand how you dress up as christian grey. Is he not basically a dude in a suit, or, sometimes, a dude not in a suit?

Political correctness gone mad I'll tell you!

Next thing I won't be able to send my daughter to school dressed as Lolita!

I dunno. I haven't read the book or seen the film. I guess a grey suit and a few ambiguously themed props? 🙂

EDIT: above at NW's post.

And judging from some of the costumes appearing on my Fb feed, lots of them are so shoddy they'd need explaining on arrival at school anyway.

At least she didn't send him in with a riding crop and a butt plug.

Its not really 'in the spirit' of the day is it. Whilst not specificed in the 'T&C's', I assume the idea is to go as a character from a book you (the Child) has actually read.

I once went to school dressed as snake eyes from action force. I was pure raging when they said I was a commando. I'm a ninja! Philistines. But in keeping with this particular theme I suppose with the black clothes, gun and facemask I could have just said I was going as a rapist.

His mum said he hadn't read the book. I think my mum would have said the same about all those Harold Robbins literary classics she thought I hadn't read either.

This.

I think I'd be a bit concerned if an 11 year old was reading that sort of book, not least because of the appalling standard of the writing*.

*Or so I've been told.

He wore a grey suit...stick the mask and zip ties in his bag and he becomes smartly dressed...no issues I can see.

I'm sure they said on the radio this morning that his teacher was dressed as a fictional serial killer. It was just a snippet I heard so may not be accurate.

I think the issue is that the mother probably thought it was a good idea to be confrontational and see if she could get away with it. Poor little Jonny probably has no real clue about what all the fuss was about and he's just a pawn in his stupid mother's silly game.

It's not really considered a great book I think - wouldn't want anyone to think anyone in my family would read such tripe even if old enough.

At which point, he's not dressed as a character from a book, he's dressed as a noncharacter from an office.

Yeah but if you kick back with some armenian midget porn on 18:45 to nunthorpe you don't half get some funny looks.

Is this better or worse than Myleene Klass* sending her daughters to school dressed as Myleene Klass, carrying a book she wrote?

http://metro.co.uk/2015/03/05/myleene-klass-hits-peak-world-book-day-by-sending-her-daughters-to-school-dressed-as-er-myleene-klass-5090669/

*She's a TV presenter or something, probably. I dunno, I don't read Heat.

Of course you know who Myleene Klass is. 😛

She just seem to enjoy trolling the parents at her kids' school though.

I thought that was, well, class. And who doesn't like dressing up like their mum?

You are norman Bates and I claim my free room in your hotel

What an ego maniac her Mum is

IMHO its not appropriate to send a child to school dressed as a character from a book about sex. If you wont let them read it then dont dress them as the main character.

I always got funny looks when I did.

Of course you know who Myleene Klass is.

I've heard the name, of course, I just have no idea what she's famous for.

Given that an 11 year old is unlikely to understand what it means to be saucy or kinky, and even less likely to know anything about the world of BDSM, it's clearly just a joke.

"yes i am this fella from a book about stuff my mum read but wont say what happens. No, no I never thought to google the book either"

he said convincingly to Molgrips earlier

I agree its just a joke

The mum raised some really good points in the article... the teacher who banned the kid was dressed as Dexter, a Serial killer... is it a kids' event or an adult party at that school? They asked him to change to James Bond, who shags women and shoots people...
There are plenty of bloody CHILDREN's books to choose from, people!
(Does that sound like I care about this?)

I think you made a good effort there Dezzie. You get a silver star to stick on your tablet before the bell goes. 🙂

At least he went as a character that originally appeared in a book - most of them at my kid's school go as movie characters, justified on the basis that there is usually a "book of the film" produced at some point.

It made me laugh. And highlights some of the weird standards in our society.

A little bit curious how those who think this is acceptable would feel if their young daughters asked to go as Anastasia. Or maybe Lolita.

Myleen Klass is one of those people who can actually sing and play instruments well. It's just a shame she's gone done the 'sleb' route.

Yesterday was one of the best days as my wonderful brother won best author award on Blue Peter, voted for by children for his book: The Silly Book of Side Splitting stuff.
Whoops sorry gone off topic a bit but I'm so proud.

A bit weird for a parent to do this IMHO. It means having to explain to the kid what the cable ties are for. A bit early for that I would have thought.

My sister in law appeared to have this with to my 9 year old nephew suit tie handcuff on one wrist and "pash rash" of lipstick on his mouth . she put the picture on facebook sat back and enjoyed the outrage but has in fact sent him in in something wholly appropriate.

"bondage zip ties"

Please tell me that's just the Guardian explaining what they're for or can you actually buy special zip ties for bondage?

Either way I can't believe this is in the news or the fuss.
