I visited Chapelcross nuclear power station on a school trip, and the control room looked a bit like some of those Soviet photos. I remember a lot of bakelite control boards with lit up glass panels.

The advent of a digital screen with 20 or so traces has made things a lot easier
I've been trying to find a picture of a Shackleton cockpit (might have been a Nimrod or something) "in use" as they had ISTR all the engine dials "wrongly" aligned so that the pilot could see at a glance everything was ticketty-boo.
In other words, at standard temps and pressures all the dials' arrows pointed to 12 o'clock and without reading or even really seeing the readouts the crew would know there was a problem.
Anything that requires interpretation or more clarity could kill you.
