Bit disappointed to be fair, was hoping to get him a better mountain bike! We were thinking second hand to be fair because I can't see it getting that much use! Anything to look out for that's decent? Is it still mongoose and haro like back in my day??

I've been looking too. There's loads of choice with shorter top tube, 16 & 18" wheels etc. One thing I've found is that unless you want to go crazy, the weight penalty is big - 25lb ish.

My gigantic five year old is getting a race bmx instead, about 16lb instead and I've sourced some knobbly tyres to go on it. Winstanleys looks like a good bet - loads of choice.

Let me know what you go for.

The weight shouldn't be too bad for him after riding his halfrauds steel beast for the last year ๐Ÿ˜ฏ
My main concern is the gearing, they just seem a tad high, the idea I suppose is that they're usually for flattish ground, but we live at the top of a hill ๐Ÿ˜†

You can mess about with the gears a bit I spose.

My long term solution is to find a decent race bmx and stick a low geared sturmey archer 3 speed on it. Not sure if it's financially or physically possible though.

My eldest (also 7)has a Haro race BMX and it is soooo much lighter.
This makes a huge difference. It's simple enought to change the gearing on these if the single gear is too high.
He's got a Cube mountainbike too, but even though this has gears the weight almost neutralises their benefit.
Maybe look for a 2nd hand race bmx?
