Currently driving a civic type r!
Due to the roads he drives to get to his new work in Buxton via the via gellia he's determined to get a 4x4 of any description!
So the remit is
4wd
30 (please) mpg
2007 onwards?
Comfortable, hr drive each way
Fun?
Diesel.
10k
I suggested off the top of my head 2 grand classic shaped scoob with some skinnys on and save the rest, or an Audi of the Quattro breed but he reckons nothing available that hasn't been to the moon and back.
Not into IT or mountain biking so an Audi is ok?
He does know most 4x4s only kick in when the front wheels lost traction now a days? You are looking at a thousand pounds to modify them to permanent awd on a lot of cars and you will lose even more mpg.
I do hate 4x4s in general but I just like to make sure people realise the disadvantages of them so their head can accept what their heart wants.
If you can find one a scout octavia would be good and is 99% as nice as a VW which is 99% as nice as an Audi.
Jag xtype awd or alfa 159 q4 if he dosnt mind a 3.2 v6 petrol 🙂
4wd, diesel and fun dont exist.
Legacy estate in diesel flavor. Petrol is funner though.
I would have thought the Via Gellia is a lot of fun in a Type-R.
He mentioned the jag earlier but it's a bit thirsty apparently! I tried to explain the 4wd mythology (impreza owner here and with fat tyres on its like a blue sledge on the snow) he wouldn't have it so I said **** it get a Landy defender and you'll be able to go off road the whole way!

They do, just not on that budget
X-Trail.
Panda 4x4 or the civic type R and a good set of winter tyres, and a dose of MTFU.
When I worked at Castleton, most of the guys came in from Sheffield/Buxton/Glossop/Macclesfield and not one of them drove a 4x4, come to think of it I don't think any had winter tyres.
Renault Koleos, 10k will get you an 09 plate, and will do 40mpg, and won't have a million miles on the clockand best of all its all reliable Nissan X trail underneath.
Can u get the new TT Quattro diesel for £10k yet?
Probably not, but worth a look...
Golf 4Motion, but not sure it was available as a diesel and not sure if it's that much fun too drive, either.

I have no idea if this is any good though.
Another vote for the Octavia Scout 4x4 here. We've got one and it's fab.
Ive got an xtrail and it sounds like it fits his bill, the 4 wheel drive can turned on from 2 wheeled and there is diff lock and hill decent. so you can save money by not running 4x4 all the time.
Mine has been reliable and you can fit 2 bikes in the back with loads of kit, wheels off though. Its comfortable not as comfy as a audi allroad but still ok.
I would avoid land rover as basically there shit, I spent 10 years repairing them.
tell him to give putting winter tyres ago we had to do that in Germany and Norway and there brilliant and might save hi having to buy a thirsty heavy 4x4

This is probably the correct answer but not what he wants to hear. Even with snow up to the sill and a rather steep hill I never got stuck.
If he's after a smaller car, the Toyota Urban cruiser is quite nice (a friend had one as a company car). The Diesel ones are 4X4, will get 50-60 MPG and will take 4 6ft+ people if required.
there should be a reasonable range of low mileage (25k miles) models within his budget.
SM
people are determined to get to work in the snow...... never understood that unless self employed.
personally i just kick back and VPN in from home for the day ........
but then i have a very email based job and can quite easily work from my iphone for long periods till i need to fly somewhere.
the thought of getting stuck in the snow and the chaos traffic means my internal "is it safe ometer" goes off .... despite the fact i cycle in most day and have 2 (old) 4x4s in my drive.
Im with you on the scoob except they aint comfortable places to be - reminds me of my hyundai lantra hatebox.
Personally id be looking at an octy 4x4 if he really must have 4x4 other wise id just get a FWD with good ground clearance and some winter tires ..... only time i got stuck in it i was stuck next to a rav 4 ...... a nissan patrol v8 with chains on its rear wheels hauled us out.
to who ever suggested golf it has pish all ground clearance - ground clearance will stop you before you need 4wd.
Golf R32 Mk V almost fits the bill. 4WD, a LOT of fun to drive, 28-29mpg if you don't cane it too much and fits the budget.
I would agree with the 4WD comments though. Anything more than a mm or two of snow and it just spins all 4 wheels. My suggestion would be a Golf GTi with some winter tyres
You can get Lada Nivas again - £11K OTR
just to be different 🙂
hahah im in Turkmenistan jota - the lada niva and the UAZ are king .... the hilux and the mitsubishi "no so good" as the locals say to me.
If i had the money id love a lada just for a toy. they are comically good off road.
Shame it wouldnt last long on our roads with its lovely soviet steel body !
Nissan Qashqai 4WD, same basic system as the X-Trail but smaller and more fuel efficient.
Drove one to Germany in Feb this year on the weekend with lots of snow, no problems the whole way.
I did the exact journey from Belper to Buxton for 3 years. The Via Gellia is great fun. I had a Corolla T Sport at the time. The only problem I had was I used to chase the bikes.....
You really don't need a 4x4. In 3 years I never failed to get to work. It is however a nice reason to get a new car.
I would also look at a VW Tiguan for around £9.5k 80k on the clock.
4wd, diesel and fun dont exist.
A3 Quattro sport tdi. I have one, its awesome.
I have a five too.
