Ever since I read this, I have been utterly fascinated by Krakatoa.
Now, with these recent quakes and tsunamis, I find myself wondering if Anak Krakatau is warming up for a big one.
Thing is, it raises many interesting questions. For example, the Bay of Naples is a volcano, as is Yellowstone Park. If either of them were to blow, what the hell would happen? Truly humbling.
Its all the fault of human beings and their over-reliance on fossil fuels. It true, Big Al said so.
From what Bill Bryson goes on about in 'a short history of nearly everything' if Yellowstone goes up it'll be goodbye to most life on Earth.
Not wanting to sounds pessimistic or nothing!
that'd sort global warming out for a while, last time Krakatoa blew lead to the "mini-ice age" with winter fairs on the Thames.
would do wonders for the Scottish ski industry too!
Is Edinburgh buillt on an a non working volcanoe, just like most of its inhabitants, bloody big bang, and scotlands gone, and we save a mint on whingeing scots.
Truly humbling
Didn't think that was possible with you ๐
apparently there's a volcano the size of Rotherham sitting somewhere under part of the UK, I forget where it is though
oh yeah, it's Rotherham
and it's not a volcano
it's a shithole
Yep if Yellowstone blows we are all in the smelly & no doubt.
Personally Im more concerned about the Hayward Fault clicky
Cos if that goes (being in San Francisco) Im gonna be in the poo & no doubt!
Auckland has something like 70 cones dotted around the city, we could find ourselves with North ,South and Middle islands quite easily.
Vesuvius will blow, and quite soon, if previous history is anything to go by. Depend if it's a dribble like it was in 1944, or a proper Plinian eruption like in 78AD.
either way, I wouldn't fancy being on holiday in say Amalfi, or Sorrento, at the time. Can you imagine the traffic?
Yeah, looks like it could be gearing up. We haven't had a proper big bang in a long while... wonder which one is going to go.
Yellowstone going would be deeply exciting... and not in a good way.

T O S S E R. Hope some of that money goes on grammar and spelling.
RepacK, your due an earthquake as well there? ๐

An E.L.E (Extinction Life Event). The Yellowstone caldera geology indicates a cycle of approximately 60k years between blows. The last time it blew was, let's see - approximately 60k years ago.
The Alpha thread would suddenly stop, that's for sure...
They say its a very strong possibility that the Hayward Fault will rupture by 2030 & when it does go it is expected to be at least a magnitude of 7..When that happens California will be proper ****ed but you know the odd thing is the average Californian doesnt even think about it! But as a Brit Im sh1tting myself! Still might create a few more trails ๐
RepacK - probably because from the birth they would have learnt about earthquakes etc? Same with peeps in Koyto etc?
we are all going to die*
*eventually, who was the STW doomsayer?
makes a mockery of all the 'safe the planet for future generations' b**locks, best to go rape the planet now whilst there's some of it left *looks at BMW 4x4 websites*
Yeah its really odd - they dont even think about it but with me its always there you know? Its like my spidey sense (if I had one) is on a permanent tingle for even the slightest shiver..So bizarre..Anyways its 1 AM here so Im off to bed - have a good one in Blighty this w/e where ever you ride ๐
Did anyone ever see that programme about super volcanos - it discussed what would happen if Yellowstone erupted. Pretty much the end of civilization.
Or, to put it in simple terms, we will all live in Rotherhams.

Cressers is the one you are thinking of Rocketdog.
Personally I'm hoping for a new volcano to be formed in Norfolk, then I can live safely but go ride in some hills without a massive drive as Cambridgeshire needs a major tectonic event to make the topography more interesting!

Yellowstone is on a ~600,000 year cycle. Is last erupted between 630 - 640,000 years ago, meaning we are 30-40,000 years overdue.
But you are correct if it blows it'll be a global extinction event.
meaning we are 30-40,000 years overdue.
In that programme I saw it mentioned this, but basically said a small degree of miscalculation could actually mean it is still 100,000 years + off another blow.
Or perhaps its 140,000 years overdue?
Shall I go out and sp*nk all my savings on coke and prostitutes?
brakes - what have you got against Rotherham?

Erm, the term extinct suggests it will not blow ever again. That's kinda the definition of the term.
an erruption in Naples may benefit Italy by finally ridding it of the mafia

I hope you realise that also means the Scots you have down south won't be able to come home.
You've got them for keeps. Ah well, Brown wants to be an Englishman anyway.
if Yellowstone goes up
I think its more like when not if.
