My daughter wrote to the SMP asking about the Union Jack and whether they would take the Blue
They wrote back with a very vague answer

It's the flag of the Scot Free British nation.
IE the Union flag without the saltire, which presumably would be what would happen if Scotland separated itself from the rest of the UK.
Are you suggesting that the flag of Scot Free Britain would look different ?
Wouldn't it just be called Britain?
You think Scotland puts the Great in Great Britain ?
Wouldn't it just be called Britain? You think Scotland puts the Great in Great Britain ?
'Britain' is just the name of the landmass- the island that England, Wales and Scotland sits on, how the population on that piece of map group themselves or divide themselves doesn't matter, the piece of land is still called Britain. The 'Great' doesn't mean 'Fab' it just means Greater as in the larger amount - the island of Britain and its associated surrounding smaller islands (but thats not to confuse it with the 'British Isles' which is the whole archipelago and include Ireland and all Ireland's islands). So it would take the physical removal of those islands to take the 'Great' away from 'Great Britain'
Historically the Island of Britain was know as Greater Britain to distinguish it either from the island next door, (according to Ptelomy Ireland was 'Little Britain') and from Britanny, known at times as 'Lesser Britain'
The United Kingdom of Naysayers.
The Cumbrian Empire
The Not So United States of England.

Get the hell out of my country.
St Patrick's cross and St Georges cross and the welsh dragon. In red. In the Middle. And commensurably small.
On that basis, should it not be St Georges Cross, with a Dragon on one white panel, and a Red Hand on the other 😈
Pitchshifter dealt with this in 1999
(admittedly, in one of their worst songs)
Are you suggesting that the flag of Scot Free Britain would look different ?
Maybe some Irish/Welsh additions would be good for this nation you call Britain.
Well you're talking about completely redesigning the flag, I wasn't, I was suggesting what it would look like without the inclusion of the saltire.

Well thanks for that.
I'm going for Reduced Fat Britain.
Got to be an extra star on Old Glory
Whatever the name the new minimalist flag, freed from all the ridiculous fussiness of the existing union flag, will look a lot better imo.
Finally an advantage of Scottish independence - no more worries about flying the flag the wrong way up (I'm assuming that unlike the flag in your photo, removing the saltire would allow them to make it symmetrical - otherwise it will be a whole lot worse!)
That's the only reason I want independence tbh, I live in constant fear of having to hang a union flag and getting it wrong. It's no way to live.
but how will you show your distress when Scotland leaves?
Hang on though. Is the flag an asset, and if so is it really fair that Scotland gets 1/3 of the existing flag and rUK only 2/3? It seems Scotland would get an unfair proportion, compared to population or landmass - AS might tell you that's what you'll get, but I think you'll find the Edinburgh Agreement specifies terms of independence won't be unfair to rUK. At most I reckon you'll only get half a saltire.
That's not to mention Shetland - or will they continue to have to fly a flag which isn't theirs?
America's bitch? 😈 😆
Well aracer Salmond could always commit an independent Scotland to carry on flying the union flag, even without an agreement from Westminster. After all no one can stop a country flying the British flag if they want to.
Not an ideal solution I know, and a bit muddled, but at least it would help to allay any fears that independence for Scotland might result in noticeable change.
It would ring out that important nationalist message loud and clear : "It's safe to vote for independence because nothing will change".
It's bloody grim watching you 2 try to do humour. Stop it. Ffs! 😆
You're suggesting that Scotland should let a different country have control of their vexillography? Not really independence is it?
Well to be fair Scotland would still be in the UK. Just because Scotland becomes an independent country it wouldn't automatically mean that it was no longer in the UK, that's just scaremongering by Westminster, so I can't see why there would any problem with Scotland flying the UK flag.
Really, it's brutal.
...will we even notice?
Former UK.
Or FUK for short.
(and I copied that from the BBC website but it's quite good I think ?)
Erm, what do New Zealand, Hawaii, Bermuda, Australia, Fiji, Tuvalu, Ontario etc. do?
Do they have to change their flags too?
New Zealand is having a referendum about changing the flag anyway. The existing one is so Colonial, and anyway like most good things about NZ, the Australians copied it.
I plan to vote for an entirely black rectangle.
Not really bothered what we call ourselves.
But if the scots actually find the bottle to 'do one' I'll feel a whole lot better calling myself British than when we had them dragging along behind us mewling and squealing.
New Zealand is having a referendum about changing the flag anyway.
A few of the ex-colonies are going down this route. I guess this might just precipitate some action.
I think it's a bit silly, they should have a referendum about something important, like the next All Black Captain when Richie McCaw retires. (makes "I'm Not worthy" gesture)
