Hmm...how expenive is not too dear....and I take it you mean abroad?
I would suggest for guaranteed snow the cheapest option would be hop on Easyjet/ryanair to Geneva from Edinburgh when flights are cheap and hire a car for 2 days - then take your pick of hundreds of ski resorts. Porte du soleil ski area does have v cheap accom and the kids can go sledging etc
BTW,Lapland is ridiculously expenive for a short break

I already checked Lapland and had to go ans sit in a quiet place for a minute. I can get flights to Stickholm for less than £100 for 5 of us but I don't know anything about Sweden but i guess it'll be snowy.

if you don't mean skiing then Salzburg is lovely around christmas, plenty to entertain the kids, loads of christmasy stuff and you can get up to the top of the Untersburg(?) by bus/ski lift and see some proper mountains.

This was taken within half an hour of getting a train from the centre of town:

Thought about the Cairngorms. Is there a good chance of snow in December?

Well maybe 3/4 of the way up Cairngorm there will be (and rain and 50mph winds) ...don't expect any snow in Aviemore town. If you want to stay where there will be snow outside your door head overseas. Cheap flights to stockholm is great, but getting around + food + accom = megabucks.

I wouldn't bet on snow in Stockholm. That far south and by the coast you could be dissapointed. Thats why the Christmas trips are much further to the north in Finnish or Swedish lapland.

I can't see this as being an inexpensive trip.

Indeed I'd hoped to make a snowy getaway but couldn't find any way of doing it cheaply for two adults, seems to be rocking at around 500 quid all in each per week.
