I've been on a road bike ride on the lanes around Charlwood, Rusper, and Newdigate, just a couple of miles or so from Gatwick, there was no snow or ice, although plenty of surface water. When I left the area at approx 12.30 I would say the temperature was about 5C.

Hope you had a nice ride then Ernie, but spare a thought for me, Portia and little Tarquin, won't you - there's not a gaggia or any decent olives anywhere to be seen

Well we had a snow shower at about 8am and because the air temp was 0C it momentarily settled, but not on the roads. By 9am the temp was above freezing and I would say that by 10am there was no traces of snow (I was near Gatwick by then).

However the 8am snow shower obviously scared a lot of people because the Addiscombe club run was down to 25, from a more typical 60-80 this time of year. Soft southerners eh? 🙂

ernie : you get 60-80 folk out on a club run?, surely that's more akin to a race?….how can you get that many folk on bikes, on public roads safely? - i doubt there's that many folk in dumfries & galloway who actually ride.

He never mentioned the word "safely".

Damn right Jota……this whole bipedal nonsense that homo-sapiens have been trying to push on us for 300000+ years will never catch on, why else would we in Dumfries & Galloway have large calluses on our knuckles?

In summer its more like 80-100, depending on the weather. The biggest ever was one Saturday in 2007 when there was 122 which apparently made the Addiscombe club run the biggest in Britain. However I believe that Dulwich Paragon club runs are now bigger than Addiscombe's.

Obviously we don't ride in one group, 4 or 5 or more groups depending on the numbers, at different speeds, all leaving from the same place and ending mostly in the same cafe via different routes.

Addiscombe do tend to ride in tight groups/pletons which yeah does sometimes piss off impatient motorists who have to wait to overtake a group of maybe 20 riders, but there is safety in numbers and we watch out for each other. I've been hit on a club run by a motorist who didn't see me, but that was when I was riding along side another club member who had got dropped and there was just the two of us - I'm sure the driver would have paid more attention had there been 20 of us.

Cycle Lab in Johannesburg gets nearer to 300 for its Saturday dawn rides. Luckily there they've got the space.
