Morning,
I will be driving to Austria for a bit of snowboarding in the first week of April this year and looking at the stuff I need, most seems quite cheep, such as HI-Vis, headlight splitters etc.
The AA does say that I need Snow chains, but as I am staying in Mayrhofen and it is very low, I am assuming that we will not encounter any snow on the roads. Does this mean I still need chains etc?
Has anyone who has done this and knows what the local laws are like etc?
Thanks
In winter conditions the use of four winter tires or snow chains on at least two tires is now mandatory in Austria between 1 November and 15 April.
These new provisions are strictly enforced and control points are common.
Bear in mind that this is obligatory and neglicence is subject to fines up to EUR 5000,- and/or the requirement to stop the use of the vehicle altogether.

Yup, you are required by law to at least have them in the car.
I'd have thought you would be a target for checkpoints as well, as you will have a foreign number plate.
Since you're driving over, buy them in a Hyper-U or other large french hypermarket. Much cheaper than here, austria or anywhere near the mountains.
When the mrs drove to livignon she had some winter Tyres fitted, made a massive difference and actualy worked better than the 4x4 with normal Tyres that her Mate was using,
Chains are a pita taking em on and off all the time
Does any one know where to get snow chains from at a discount price, by the look of this?
Thanks
Reg
I would imagine supermarkets in France would have them cheap. I can get them for 30,00€ in a supermarket in Spain or 70,00€ in a Halfords type shop.
Practice in the warm and dry conditions a few times, they should only take a minute or two to put on properly, and make sure you can fit them properly. There is nothing worse than faffing around in cold, wet conditions in the dark trying to put the ruddy things on, not that it's ever happened to me...
Put some rigger gloves in the box too. Numb, snow/slush covered hands do not make it any easier 🙂
you expect there to be any snow left by april?
Well there has been snow in April the last few years Jam bo
Yep. and this is a very strange year in the alps.
It was 15 degrees in Flaine when I left on saturday afternoon. Barely any snow on south facing slopes and nothing below 1100m....
