My head feels like it is full of carpet adhesive and iron filings.

Snot...

What is it?

Where does it come from?

How can a medium sized head (according to Giro, although the new Hex is a little snug) produce so much of it?

Due to the raw skin under my nose I am now sporting one of those Andy Parsons/Rapha Benitez baldy-man's goatee things.

I feel like * and I look like a *.

From your mucus membranes, it's produced to trap dust and crap from getting in your lungs. When you have a cold they go a bit mental and work overtime.

... & does it's full-time production during winter rides affect dehydration at all?

(just wondered after the weekend rides, a never-ending cycle of sniff, sniff, clear... sniff, sniff, clear... etc.)

Well I suppose it will but probably a lot less then trying to keep warm does.

good and timely question.

What am I doing wrong with snot rockets? You block one side and blow but I always end up with the snot all down the upper sleeve on the same side as the blowing nostril. There must be something I'm missing, and much like spending time trying to bunnyhop, i can't be arsed to go out and practice this technique either.

Unless you are an accomplished or gentically gifted snotter, then dont try to exacuate your nostrils over the top of your arm thats holding the bars, make like a proper roadie and snot under your arm, i.e lift your elbow and snot through the gap. Occassionally even this goes wrong and you end up with greenie down the side of your leg, but it is generally more succesful and indeed more pleasant than sporting it on your arm / shoulder

H the S - For the sore bit under your nose - get some "happinose" balm from the chemist...

1) Use baby wipes, stings a bit at first but they stop your nose skin from drying out due to frequent blowing.
2) Drink laods of water - snot is a water/carbohydrate mix thingy so you need water to amke good runny snot.
3) Drink loads of water - your nose has hairs in it near the end and a funny internalk shape to prevent water loss during breathing, when its blocked you breath through your mouht - basically a large evaporator - so you lose tons more water and get a sore mouth ulcers etc.
4) Drink more water - because I said so. Actually it helps the white blood cells to do their thing a recent study (funded by evian/volvic/breconcraaeg etc) foudn that drinking more water cures every known disease and all the unknown ones too.

Snot clearing when riding.

Left nostril:

1. Right hand off bar
2. Right index finger closes right nostril
3. Raise left elbow slightly
4. Look downwards
5. Blow hard - snow will disappear twixt leg and torso

Right nostril: as for left nostil, but for "right" read left" and vice versa (mutatis mutandis etc.).

For snot clearing while riding I use right index finger to close left nostril and snot out over my right shoulder with head turned to the right, reverse for other side. No snot / arm interface issues.
