Looking for a general costing idea so i know if I'm being ripped off by the local roofers - looking at the price of fixing a few (3 or so) slipped tiles (old clay ones about 6"x6"). I've had a few slip in the latest storms and im now getting a little water in as the felt doesnt stretch fully across to the corner between the main roof and the dormer. I was going to re-tile the whole dormer and re-felt it while I'm at it, but im 50:50 as a) I can't be bothered and b) I don't have any enormous ladders to reach the roof. That said, if it's going to be in the hundreds I'd rather save the cash and do it myself. General consensus so far has been it's a couple of hours labour for cash unless I want it re-tiling. Thoughts?

3 tiles? You'll get a local one man band to do that on his way home for 40 quid no worries. It's 20 mins work unless they're all over the place and awkward to get to

If you dont want to do it yourself, dont worry about getting a speacialist roofer in. Just give a local independant builder a call, you must know someone whos mates with a builder? Most builders would be more than capable and you should be able to do a deal for beer money. All builders like little jobs they can do on the way home to fill up a day and go home with some folding money in the pocket.

Got a couple of local firms (including one who chatted to me from the top of a house on his mobile lol) coming to see and quote, none would give estimates over the phone which is fair enough I suppose!

Access is going to be the issue. If it can be done safely from a ladder than I'd expect a quote of around £100. If it's going to need scaffolding or a tower, then you can at least treble that figure.

If I had a long ladder I'd have done it myself by now it's that easy!

Problem with tiles is all the C**p that builds up under them: Birds nests, mice nests, soot, horsehair from the felt (if old roof) etc.
This means that if you disturb any of the adjacent tiles you end up having to strip 30 of them off just to sweep all the s**t out. Once they move you can't get them down again otherwise!!

Aye sure it is, 16yrs of doing roofing work tells me that joe public can do it all. 🙄

Nip down to hire shop and get a set of ladders then.

Cheers, I must be a genius then as I managed fine last time I did some work. 🙄 It's still fine and leakproof now.

Don't have that much free time anymore and it would cost as much to hire them, drive about getting them, get the replacement bits as send a chappy up to do it for me. Trust me, if I need a large section re-doing I'll be doing it myself and it'll be fine. Sorry if that upsets your views.

You must be 🙄

Its reassuring to know that I wasted 4yrs of my life serving my apprenticeship.
