MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
I've continued to use Skype occasionally for calls to foreign phone numbers.
Most VOIP services seem to only allow contact-to-contact phone calls (eg to call someone on WhatsApp requires call recipient to have a WhatsApp account).
Skype allows you to dial a phone number (yes, it does cost a small amount of money) but is there anything else which does similar?
I'm going abroad and will be using an eSim and most eSim providers only include data (no minutes or texts, so phone cards are not an option).
I don't understand the issue with using Skype. It's a data service, so you can use it when you're abroad.
I still use it for just the purpose you do (but infrequently enough that I usually have to make a quick call when I get the email to tell me my credit is going to expire)
I think I can make calls on Teams on my mobile.
It's through work though and the functionality was only recently switched on for us so not sure if it's available for individuals.

Skype is OK but it's a bit flaky and I wondered whether there's anything a bit more modern/polished.

I use Teams for work and that doesn't seem to have the ability to dial a number (though I can call any of my work colleagues as they are already contacts with Teams accounts)
My Teams mobile app has a number key pad to make calls. I haven't actually used it but I assume it does the same as the desk top app and lets me call anyone...
What about WhatsApp for a phone or video call. Thats a data service too so you could go through wifey as well.

Your organization must have a Teams phone plan whereas mine doesn't...

I don't have a WhatsApp account (can't says I'm a fan on Zuckerbergs business model) so does it allow phone calls to businesses eg to call a random shop or hotel or restaurant? Or does it only allow calls to your own WhatsApp contacts?
Good point, WhatsApp for calls is your contacts only, not randoms. My mistake.
Whatsapp is a pain if you're abroad and change your sim to a local one. Can't remember what happened to me now, but when i last came to the UK I ended up losing my ability to use Whatsapp and lost all the history when I got back to Oz.
