The building work at chez j is entering the final phase and its shower chosing time.

I'm looking at mira units, but many of them control flow and temperature with the same dial. I've only ever used independently controlled ones in the past, and I'm not sure I'm convinced about the the single dial ones.

They will be fed from a new mains pressure hw tank if that makes any difference.

This is the sort of thing I mean

It's got a thermostatic valve built in which controls the temperature. Ours works great, wouldn't go back to an electric shower now. Ours feeds straight fro a combi boiler though, don't know how a hw mains pressure tank works.

I think they look neater with the H&C pipes concealed, with just a dial on the shower wall, but its a minor point.

Ours has been faultless btw.

We have that exact shower. I installed it about 2 years ago and it has been faultless. It has externally serviceable pre filters on the hot and cold stream, and it was a pretty easy install.

The unit is quite heavy mind, so make sure you get some good mounting hardwear and put it on a good wall. Ours is mounted to a partition wall for the airing cupboard, so it was to get access to both sides. I fitted a large peice of plywood to the wall to stiffen it up and act as a load spreader, then mounted it through the wall that way.

..and are Mira really worth double the price of a Triton?

For about the same price you can get separate controls. We've got one of these which I installed myself.

And yes they are worth it. Do not buy cheap bath/shower stuff if you want it to work well for ever

Captain that is the one I think we are going to get. Well the hidden valve one anyway.

I know a guy at Mira who designs these. They really are pretty neat inside, use good materials and the support, should something go wrong, is very good (keep the receipt if you buy one!!). They are also standardising the fittings for the mixer bodies, so if you decide to change it in a few years time, the existing pipework should still line up with the new mixer, saving a lot of hastle.

IMO - yes, they are twice as good as the equiv Triton.

Anybody know if all thermostatic units have an adjustable max temperature?

I know I should take it apart and find out, but the (currently) unknown amke and model of my shower never gets really hot. When its on Hottest its about right, but won't go any hotter.

Its fed from the boiler yet never gets as hot as the water running out of the taps.

It has a single tap for temperature and a seperate tap for flow.

Any ideas?

We spent a while looking at alternative showers - we went with a Mira because they were clearly built to a much higher standard, with better materials than Triton - much less chrome plated plastic for example - that stuff always peels in the medium to long term.

We've got one of these in our new house, its fed from our mains pressure combi boiler. Its the best shower I've ever used. you set the temperature in degrees C on one dial and turn it on off with the other. The thermostat is so good you can turn the shower off and on and never get scalded or frozen.

Our Builder used to fit Mira but switched to Grohe because they were more reliable.

We have a Grohe wireless shower. So much better than any twisty single dial bollocks. You can dial in the exact temperature and it maintains that perfectly. With the digital controller you can also save presets, and turn the shower on from outside the cubicle to let it warm up. We would never, ever, go back to anything else.

That grohe wireless one looks bling, but is it worth the extra £250(475-223), or twice the price?

Is it likely to give a more stable temperature?

I am not going to get into my showers better than yours or to slag off other peoples product. To be honest they are not worth twice the price. From tritons point of view they control their costs all across the board way much better than mira so the product is cheaper.
