I like many of you get cold hands when outside in winter, I believe this is the body reducing the blood flow to the area so it can concentrate on keeping more important bits working.

When you cut yourself the blood rushes to fix that area, so if you put a pin prick in each cold finger would they warm up?

(yes I know gloves are a better solution)

No, no, no I think you might be onto something... blood loss to keep yourself warm... my only concern is that in a lot of war films where people are hemorrhaging large volumes, they start saying stuff like 'I'm so cold Billy, I don't wanna die'... maybe there is an optimum blood loss to heat generating level, after which point it becomes detrimental to you health?

Have you been on the wacky baccy tonight per chance?

Why don't you try it and report back? Of course for a on optimum scientific test you should do this to only one hand and see which one is warmer.

Thats only because the heat is rushing to the wound so the rest of them is cold. In a controlled manner I think you might be onto something 😆

I think it just leaks out, it has to be there anyway or your fingers would fall off 🙁

Instead of spilling claret is there maybe some way of embarrassing your hands? Make them blush somehow?

The Southern Yeti, no amount of "wacky baccy" would make you stick pins in your fingers, unless "other issues" were involved 😆

Whatever you do don't give yourself a panhandle. Don't want ALL the blood rushing elsewhere 1

My hands are never prouder than at that point....boys pants though, my hands would never forgive me.

The wacky stuff might not make you stick pins in your hand but it certainly aids with lateral thinking!

I heard some survival SAS fella on the telly explain how to warm your hands - it forces blood to them

you basically do the most exaggerated hand clap you can using your full arms without actually clapping
ie you start with your arms as far back as you can & finish with them as far forward & round as they go - you need to do this vigourously

I can offer some advice.

As a diabetic, I have to do frequent blood sugar tests. This basically involves sticking a in in your finger and then putting the blood on a tester. I can confirm that with cold fingers, this can be bloody (no pun intended!) difficult as the blood runs away and hides. This means sticking the pin in further and squeezing the bejeesus out of your finger.

In other words, it doesn't work!

I use the penguin dance*. People laugh until they try it and it really does warm up your hands.

Arms by side, hands out to the sides and move your shoulders up and down. Pingu noises optional.
