Here's a warning of what dodgy fairylights can do, I'd be wary of candles.

its my parents christmas treee in Ebygomms picture above, we have had real candles on the trees every year for the last 38 years, never had any problems.
I would conclude that its the very stupid people who cant handle candles, not the candles that are a stupid thing...
