Bit of a vague question this. I am a bit sick of hotels whilst I am working away and fancy renting an apartment instead. The problem is that I don't know exactly when I'll be finishing this project, but it looks like being a long long time. So I can't really commit to a 6 month tenancy.

There are numerous 'corporate lets' in the area but they are really expensive, and you have to keep it stupidly tidy all the time which is annoying. There are really really nice apartments available on the open market for half the price but I suspect they'll want 6 months minimum.

What are my chances of negotiating a monthly rolling contract, do you think? I don't mind being committed to a month's notice.

Given the current market it may be worth a go - speak to agents.

Depends I guess if you rent from private landlord or through an agency. The landlord won't want to pay the letting agent £200odd quid to find a tenant for just one month. Private landlords may well be more ameanable.

theere are a few websites - I have a Mon-Fri lodger - suits us both - house mine at weekends, he can leave his kit over weeknends ...

I think its a legal technicality in the leases. A short assured tenancy( is that the right name) has to have a period of 6 months. Its different as a lodger or if it is a holiday let.

so I think its either a holiday let at the rates they charge or a 6 moth at that rate.

Can you afford 6 months rent to only live there, say, four months?

Does sanity/private place to crash/other benefits outweigh maybe the extra costs (or would it still work out cheaper than doing a hotel for four months?).

when I was in the states the time before last I stayed somewhere called extended stay america. It was still a hotel, but it was aimed at the weekly & monthly market, rather than a couple of days. Rooms had a little kitchen and a desk, and it was enough cheaper than a hotel to probably cost less to book for months and not be there at weekends.

Guess it falls into the serviced apartments kinda thing, which is what you're already looking at

At this time of year, a good option may be university accomodation - it'll only last through September, but when I was at Cardiff they rented the student rooms out during the summer, and the same was possible at sussex as well..

Where in the country? I know of a couple of rooms in Reading (about a 5 min ride from Winnersh Triangle station) and Wokingham (about 5min walk from the station) going spare (one with an epic double man cave/garrage, the other with a garrage lockup).

This is around Farnborough/Aldershot, btw. I could really use a flat rather than a room, since my wife and littleun come to visit a lot and I'm sure that'd annoy a live-in landlord 🙂

I could rent for 4 and pay for 6, but I might only end up being here for 2 in which case it'd be a bit much to pay for 6. Plus I'm on expenses, so this would look pretty weird when trying to claim.

What I want most of all is somewhere to leave a bike or two, and some more associated crap that I don't get to bring down when I'm in a hotel.

I perhaps could offer to pay over the stated price for flexibility... hmm.. Thing is the hotel is costing my client about £450-£700 a week depending on where's available, whereas a seriously nice apartment in Farnborough is half that.

TINAS - Wokingham might work but if it's a room it might not be enough.

even on a 6 month contract, you normally can have a get-out clause with xx months notice - if you make your situation known when you sign up and make sure you have this clause in I don't think there'd be an issue
