At my work, we studied the original of that with an eye on the dangers of the fires.
In the US they just drop a whole bloody Turkey in a pot of boiling oil, over a gas ring.
What could possibly go wrong?
There is a variation where you stick a can of beer up the turkey - as the heat increases, the can explodes, marinating the turkey. You'd think the shreds of metal would hurt your teeth though...

I've had deep fried turkey and its actually really nice. Not really what you would expect.
