Inappropriate is relative to your workplace. A ****ometer was perfectly acceptable(ish) in an old office bitd.

Chocolate spanner (not sure if they exist...)

They do! Local farm shop has them and they are great. You'd get the spanner and adjustable wrench for under £5.

What kind of "engineer"?

The greasy type, the dusty type, the nice pens type or the computery type?

Yep as an engineer of the civil variety, Lego would definitely work.

Or a calendar or mug of their most hated sporting team is always fun!

A 3d jigsaw type thing, but take a few bits out or better still two very similar ones, mix the bits up then box up roughly half and present it.

Lego costs a £5! Thought it was more expensive than gold these days!

Typically, when I end up with stuff like this I go to the charity shops and buy a big horrible wooden animal, last year it was a giraffe and the year before it was a duck, the wooden duck is still on my colleagues desk, haven't seen the giraffe around though! Its a double bonus as its funny to give to the person and you actually donate to charity too.

Lego, or some compatible knock off that will make a decent desk toy. Maybe Wilko or online to stretch the budget as far as it will go.
