As we are having extended family for Christmas, rather than the adults buying small gifts for each other and ending up with 'trinkets' we've decided that we'll secret santa it, so each adult buys for another and has a reasonable amount to spend on something the other person wants.

My giftee has sent me an amazon list, and has said to make up any spare with socks.

I've shopped around and can get his books elsewhere for a substantial saving over the amazon prices that he's worked from. Am I morally obliged to spend my savings on even more socks so he gets the full cash value, or can i cash it up at his amazon price and pocket the saving that i earned through my virtual traipsing through other bookshops? Or something else?

I've made my decision actually - to be revealed later - but let's see who thinks i'm right.

Doesn't seem to be much 'secret' aspect to this - he knows what he's getting and from whom!

Maybe spend the saving on an actual surprise?

If you've got enough left over split the difference. Half for you, half on an actual surprise for the recipient.

That really.

One day you or they will be dead and buying them gifts will be the least of your worries. Spend a little, live a little... when they're gone.. they're gone.

And they can't take their extensive, unused sock collection with them.

So get the second hand books and that's it. Job done.

😉

You know xmas is about the giving right ?

So spend the saving on another book recommended from amazon's "people who bought this book also bought.... " ... hopefully with your excellent internet skills, you'll be able to get this second book cheap as well

Win Win ... your giftee gets a nice surprise... and you're the bees knees in your families eyes.

And they are much more important then us STWs with too much time on our hands that will are able to post responses like this 🙂

Buy the books cheaper and get something else as a surprise to make up the value. Perhaps give a charitable donation in their name.

It is nice to give presents at Christmas but there's also no need to sacrifice everything at the altar of commercialism.
