Other than ebay and autotrader annd the local dealer (v.expensive), where do people search for cars. It's my first car so excuse my stupidness.

Back of your local paper, loot, gumtree, local shop windows, supermarket 'for sale' boards.

Depends what you're looking for. You could do worse than post a 'wanted' on here.

There are lots of back street garages here and there. Some are surely dodgy but some aren't.

Always used to make a shortlist from the local paper tho. I shortlisted by reliability.

also are car auctions any good, I have a friend with good knowledge of cars (fixs them himself etc) without actually being formally qualified.

Car auctions are usually for the highly knowledgable - have to be able to assess very quickly whether a car's going to need new tyres/discs, bodywork, any interior fixes, heater matrix, cambelt etc. It's easy to get to £1k on almost any car if you need all of the items mentioned, and in many cases that's why a car is sent to auction.

I'd steer well clear.

Don't try car supermarkets. Overpriced and over financed sales for the automotively blind. Whenever you identify a possible car do a lot of homework on it. The cheaper routes to a car rely more on your own knowledge to keep you safe. I say take a few risks - go private or auction - and start learning now while you're (presumably) further down the automotive food chain.

For the best advice, avoid cycling forums, try car forums.

The car I put in part-ex for my Prius was a brilliant car and went to auction. That's why most main dealers hardly have any other-brand cars lying around I think.
