almost certainly buying a 5 door version of this in the next couple of months. the version from late 2012 on. the 1.4 is more powerful but anyone own either or has driven both and can comment on any real world differences. Or folk who know about engines etc give any advice.

thanks

I've driven both in a yeti (got the 1.4)

The 1.2 is surprisingly good, but go for the 1.4.
You'll notice the power difference.

Our MPG is pretty poor, but that's cos it's a 4wd box...circa 35-38. Can get 42 on a longer cruise.

Nice engine - spin it up for the fun times...

I've got the 1.2 in an Ibiza. Cracking little car and engine is good, pretty quick.
I'd probably go for the 1.4 in a Leon though.

I've got the 1.4 turbo in a yeti too. It's not too bad and reasonably grunty for a petrol.

Parents have a 17 reg 1.2 and it's amazing. 4 adults and luggage didn't cause any issues.

It's far better than there 1.6 astra they had before

I've had the 1.2 Tsi in (work hire car) Beetles and Golfs and been pleasantly how well it went. But that was just me in them travelling light.

Test both, but I'd go for the 1.4. Probably. And I'm a huge fan of the 1.2 as we have it in our Fabia.

My brother's wife has the 1.2 105ps Leon on a 14 plate. They regularly take four adults in it with no problems. The motor is very impressive, he likes driving it a lot, really rates the ride and lack of NVH. His daily drive is a Golf Gti and they often take the Leon in preference to the Golf with the family.

Wife has a 1.2TSI in an Ibiza. It's better than the normally aspirated 1.4 by a country mile, but I don't know what it's like compared to a 1.4TSI. It's also way better than the 1.6 Zetec that we had in our previous Focus.

I can say that with two adults and 3 children plus shopping, it still zipped along at 50 & 60 and was still nippy around town. It's an 'eager' feeling engine and pulls strongly enough in normal driving, without being raucous. If the 1.4 is similar - you won't go wrong with either.

I've got a Leon FR 1.4 TSI 6 speed manual on a 65 plate. It replaced a 2.0 litre Peugeot 206 GTI. I've been really impressed and haven't missed the hot hatch handling - really pokey engine and has excellent acceleration and great handling, comfortable driving position, and with enough toys / equipment to keep most car geeks happy. You should be able to get a good deal on a second hand model as there was a new version launched in 2017.
