Long shot but I've had stranger questions answered here before so here does...

We're thinking of going to Dubrovnik for a week's holiday. Mrs higgo is a keen open water / sea swimmer. I was just wondering if any of the hotels are better than others in terms of access to the sea (away from any port traffic or similar).

Also recommendations for swimming tours of islands etc. She swims for enjoyment not sport so isn't really interested in anything geared towards training/racing or pushing her to swim faster than she wants to but she swims 3 or 4 times a week inc. between 3-5km on Sundays.

You can swim straight off the terrace at the Rixos and its sheltered from marine traffic. Quite pricey but is a great hotel.

A few years ago I stayed in Cavtat. It's a 45 minute ferry / 30 min bus ride from Dubrovnik.

If you look at the map it's in a lovely bay and my memory of it - it would meet your wife's swimming needs. I stayed in the aptly named 'Hotel Croatia'. There are other hotels but I'd also consider other towns on that part of the bay.

Thanks both.
The Rixos was on our list (and looks spot on) but has no availability for our inflexible dates. Cavtat is also a possibility - we're definitely not stuck on being in Dubrovnik itself. I'd seen the Hotel Croatia but the photos make it look like it's a rocky/cliff approach to the beach. Having said that, their website says they have access to two beaches so they must have.

Hotel Villa Dubrovnik if you are feeling flush, they have a free private launch running you into Dubrovnik harbour, you won't be disappointed. We also stayed on Lopud island which was about a 45 min ferry from Dubrovnik from memory- it had some bays ideal for sea swimming.

Stayed in Hotel Neptun some years back. Rocky but easy access to the sea but yeah, sandals are a good idea.

+1 for the sea shoes, went to Dubrovnik for my honeymoon and my wife stood on a sea urchin. We thought we had all the spines out, but found out a day or two later that we hadn't as they got infected. Luckily a doctor dug them out and all was good, but you have been warned!

@higgo my memory at hotel Croatia is one side (south) it's a cliff rocky approach. There are beaches on the bay (north side) a short walk from hotel one beach may belong to hotel iirc.

I've stayed in a few places in Croatia and most beaches are rocky haven't found a sandy one yet!
