No, unless polka dotted with matching brace and cummerbund in which case, pretty cool.

Yes.

And it's not a "tux", it's a dinner jacket.

Black tie means just that, a black tie.

If you even think about some sort of comedy shirt/collar combination, I will hunt you down and kill you to death.

Ask yourself...What would James Bond do...

I think you know the answer.

Men in DJ's: Hot

Men in DJ and coloured ties: not Hot

emsz - There is one thing that trumps 'Men in DJs' . When the invitations also say "with medals" and those so entitled comply with the host' s wishes. Anyone can hire a dinner jacket...

But yes, coloured ties are an awful idea.

Did someone say 1950's pilot uniform?

I should point out, before Flashheart hunts me down, a colleague is opting for a coloured one. I'm in complete agreement that it should be a black one with a tux 😉 His argument is that because the ball is optional black tie, and due to the sunny weather, a coloured bow tie is perfectly acceptable.

Presumably the correct approach at the ball is to completely ignore him and his poor judgement?

'Optional black tie' is an awful statement to put on an invitation. It just encourages people to do the 'wacky tie' thing.

Spink's guide probably doesn't cover the etiquette for wearing McDonald's badges rather than actual medals.

nutty professor

I think that about sums up the Capt.

The real question should actually be based around which type of collar you should be wearing for the occasion.

By the way, the bow tie goes around your head, Rambo style. But only from midnight onward.

Junky,

What makes you say that? Uniforms are just " a look" it's a fantasy thing, you know just smart and hunky ( oh god, can't believe I just used that word LOL )

Never dressed up? 😉

Aren't coloured ties the simple and easy code for identifying the idiots? Without this clear marker one would have to endure several minutes of drivel and inane small talk.
