OK - on Vodaphone (only one that works in my office) SIM only and out of contract. Looking at Samsung S6 on a good deal from Car Phone Warehouse.

I called VP to see if they could beat the offer and was told that I couldn't keep my number if I went with CPW as it was a new contract on the same provider! True or are porkies being told?

Also, any reason not to get a Samsung S6 (non edge).

Cheers
EDIT - Samsung would be on contract

They're kind of telling the truth. SIM porting applies to moving provider. Same provider they operate a system to try to prevent you upgrading via cheaper alternatives.

Threaten to leave if they don't match and then go through retentions for an upgrade to see if they'll match it.

Though long term you'll probably find the contract "deal" isn't at all. It's subsidised phone that's all. Buy SIM free and keep the SIM only, and if you have it long enough you'll have paid the same.

Main area you benefit from contract deals is if you change phones frequently, but often they lock you into 18 month contracts so isn't that great long term anyway.

thanks - the S6 is only 22 a month which is the only reason that I'm considering contract again. Been SIM only for years but the iphone 3S is a little long in the tooth!

Can you transfer the number to another SIM, eg a free Giff Gaff on O2, then transfer it to your new Vodafone, probably all in a few hours. I've swapped a few Giff Gaff sims and its been very easy. As above, its always worth threatening to leave then seeing what deal they offer. That said I'm over expensive phones now. SIM only and a decent budget phone, they really aren't that much worse than the big brand flagship models.

Interesting idea about the SIM switch. What 'good budget phones' can you suggest.

Last contract I started was with CPW(though still on Vodafone network), having previously been with Vodafone direct. I think it might have been two weeks before Vodafone contacted me and offered the same deal as CPW and they'd do the necessary paperwork.

I'd suggest just going back to Vodafone Retentions with your CPW deal and ask them to match it.

The moto g 3rd gen is popular on here or a Jiayu S3+ or Wileyfox Swift if you are feeling a bit left field. Just don't get a Sony Xperia. There's been a few threads in the last couple of months.

I've got a Samsung S6, it's OK, doesn't do anything wrong, it's been reliable and the battery is OK as well.
Downsides are you can't expand the memory or change the battery yourself if it does go.
I preferred my HTC one though if I'm honest.
Edit: just read another of your posts for £22 it's a good deal (I pay £40) what minutes, data and texts do you get with that?

The deals change often but I've been looking at the s6 and e2save seem to have some good deals if you can cope with cash back. Last month they had %
£23.50 a month for unlimited calls and 6 gig of data with Vodafone, free handset. Best now is £25 for about 3 gig I think.

Also considering a oneplus 2 handset which is supposed to be about as good.... Ish at£249, then sim only with ID or giffgaff.1000 minutes and 3 gig is £11 or £12 on ID.

It's a lie.

There's no reason you can't keep your number, however if the salesman gives you a new contract rather than porting an existing number they get more commission.

Oh and just call and get a PAC, once the new phone arrives call customer services from it and give them the PAC, if they get upperty find the cheapest sim only for a month to port away to turn back a few days later.

Bear in mind the S7 will be released/announced this weekend. Also a sim free s6 can be had for Under £300 generally.

Ah, sorry, misread, I thought it was the prospective new provider who told you that. Point stands though, there's no reason why you can't keep it, they're lying to try to put you off.

Voda are legally obliged to give you a PAC immediately on demand, or via text within (IIRC) 2 hours. They cannot refuse without good reason, such as you being dead. Give this code to your new provider, job jobbed.

Cheapest I can see is £279 for grade A return, or £328 new.

Thanks all. Really helpful. Haven't bought a new phone in years and this is jogging the memory as to why I went SIM only in the first place!

I'll keep plugging away at Vodaphone!

I have just changed from a sim only contact to a phone contract with Vodafone. I saw a deal in CPW and again was told that I would need a new contract and therefore a new number. Eventually I got through to a very helpful person on Vodafone Web chat who matched the CPW and just upgraded my sim only contract to a phone contract and allowed me to keep my number.

You can get a PAC legally, but PAC codes only apply to moving provider. They are legally allowed to say no if you are trying to port a number between contracts on the same network. They want you to go through upgrades rather than use a third party providing new contracts (which technically are for new customers).

How does that work, then?

You get a PAC number to go from a network, not to a network. You don't have to specify where you're going AFAIK; indeed, you don't have to go anywhere, you can get a PAC and do nothing and it'll expire in a fortnight (IIRC). So if you're moving "between contracts on the same network" how would they know? The only time that would come to light is when you apply for the new contract and you've already got your code at that point.

Moot point in the OP's case anyway, CPW are O2, different network from Voda are they not?

OP they are telling you porkies.
you are on Vodaphone and you are staying with them but getting a better deal from CPW
for that you do not need a PAC code as you are not changing provider
if you were then Vodaphone would be legally obliged to give you a PAC code on request as the number belongs to you.
they are telling you lies as they want the commission for themselves.

my wife got her contract through EE (T-Mobile as it was back then), she then went for an upgrade at an EE store over 2 years ago. last November she went for an upgrade at CPW...she still has the same number and is still with EE

as for the phone, me and the wife have gone from the S4 to the S6. big improvement on performance, but the only downsides are the non replaceable battery and the lack of expandable memory.

if you can wait a bit longer go for the S7 as the memory is expandable on that

Well it seems the retention team can at least make a decision. Asked for the PAC, was politely dealt with and asked why. Upshot, new Samsung S6 for nowt and £23 a month for unlimited mins and texts and 6G of data. They even came up with the extra data option themselves rather than the 2G package I asked for.
