For reasons known only to herself my good lady has booked our summer holiday at the aforementioned destination.
I am taking my bike as I think it likely we will get a few rainy days so I might as well go for a ride. Any decent routes within 30 odd miles, Dartmoor most likely?
Thanks
J
No.
Leave the bikes, take kites and boats and boards.
I grew up down that way and it's lovely!
The Sloop over at Bantham is rather good at the moment, excellent fish. Head to Whitestrand, hire a boat, go mackerel fishing or head to the Millbrook up at South Pool (Keep an eye on the tides to get home on!)
Oh, and Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream....nomnomnomnomnom.
Seriously though, there's really not a lot to ride around there. Some lovely bimbles around the lanes and tracks, but not much more.
Go walking. Honestly.
Not much in the way of riding, as CFH says. But the coastal walking is tops.
If you take a bike, I'd make it a road bike (and be prepared to be run off the road by [s]terrorists[/s] tourists). Walking is definitely the best option; I seem to remember most of the coast path is footpath and pretty busy.
I spent holidays in Bantham for about 15 years, and we sailed and swam or occasionally walked. When I went back after I'd started biking, Dartmoor was the best option, but it seemed to be one of those areas where local knowledge makes life a lot more fun; we could find some bridleways, but probably missed the best stuff.

Plenty, especially (relatively) nearby Dartmoor*. Plenty of green lanes and quiet tracks to string a ride together out of in the Suth Hams and plenty of pleasant scenery. I know it's not like a Welsh trail centre down here but don't understand why people claim it's not worth bringing yer bike along.
Plenty of watersports to enjoy though. Good sea-kayaking area.
BTW, don't forget to take out a second mortgage to pay for your Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream. That stuff don't grow on trees and it's addictive!
* And ignore the other South Devon cycling myth that there's no good riding on South Dartmoor.
I did 4 days there last year and I must admit I liked Surrey by the Sea also several mates are going and one of their fathers has a fishing boat there so that's covered!
Just that two weeks seems like optimism from a weather perspective.
I think Dartmoor must have some interesting riding somewhere even if it's just a day ride.
If it rains, go swimming...
There are probably some Dartmoor riders on here, so worth posting nearer the time to see if you can get a guide.
Is Gawton your kind of riding, and is it near enough?
Yep Dartmoor ridin is a bit good but dont tell anyone. Drop us a mail nearer the time and il show you around some of the good stuff... not that there is any remember...
thanks chaps.
lots of good riding close by. lots of really good riding a bit further away. take a bike else regret it.
So does that mean CFH is a Janner?
Oh, south Dartmoor has plenty of good riding.
So does that mean CFH is a Janner?
not unless he was born in Plymouth ?
I get the impression he is far too posh to be a Plymothian 😉
