We need more back story, we need detailed analysis of your decision making processes thus far. How else could we possibly come to arrive at a satisfactory decision for you?

This.

It does depend if these chips are to be eaten solo or is there an alien food joining the purist party. Depending what it is, HP might have to be substituted*.

*for avoidance of doubt HP OR mayo. Never both. Never.

Mayo and red sauce.

Only place for salad cream is on a salad cream sandwich.
Eaten by really poor kids.
In the 70s.

Fries - mayo
Chips - brown sauce
Cheese sandwiches - salad cream

Such is the truth, and any deviation is against the natural order of things

I'll give you 'deconstructed salad cream'. But it isn't.

late to the party, but soy sauce.

This needs berating.

Cheese sandwiches – salad cream

Same.

I’ll go with cheese and salad sandwiches - salad cream. With salt, pepper and vinegar. And with the emphasis on plenty salad.

Cheese by itself calls instead for coleslaw or just onion. I do remember cheese and brown sauce (or ketchup!) sarnies. Often without cheese.

mayo wins! But in light of suggestions I tried the 50 50 mayo ketchup option and was impressed

Madame surprised me with a side of grilled halloumi which I can report as fantastic served with chips!

Food is awesome!

Salad cream? Is that even a thing? It was surely some 70s marketing gimmick to wean people on to mayonnaise?

Ugh.

The answer is of course mayonnaise. And ketchup. And salt. And tubby tom’s smokey bacon seasoning. And Anglesey umami salt.

Heinz Sandwich Spread (for cheese sandwiches etc). - a delicious blend of salad cream and wee bits of veg. The latter component counts as one of your 5-a-day.

Salad cream is spunk of the devil. Honestly, I saw it on a bootleg never-broadcast "Inside the Factory".

I'm reminded of Basil Fawlty's ripost to a young lad who complained the mayonnaise was like snot. He said "at least it's fresh snot".

nope, its ace but i reserve it for chips from the chinese. soy sauce and vinegar is mint. actually I've done soy sauce and vinegar AND salad cream now i think about it.

mayo is grand also as is brown sauce. Really what you want if you are going sauce is chippy brown sauce but Binners has a poitn about curry sauce. Are muchy peas a sauce?

KEtchup is for children and burgers (and then only with mustard and pickles.)

Fries – mayo
Chips – brown sauce

An important distinction well-made.

Although if actual chip-shop chips (or Chinese chips) then the answer is - Chinese curry sauce*

*Unless unavailable - then Irish curry sauce**

** Unless unavailable - then that browny-greeny-yellowy ‘circa 1989’ Classic British curry sauce which hides sultanas in its snotsome folds.

Salad cream on chips ???, we've got a wrong 'un here 😯 😯

Maybe mayo if you are wanting a continental taste. But brown or tomato sauce or if feeling particularly bold, HP fruity sauce.

Are mushy peas a sauce?

Oh, I'd say more of a dip. And if going for chips and mushy peas then the sauce of choice reverts to brown. But I'm not sure it's needed.

Home made mayonnaise. Much nicer than bought.

Dead easy to make if you have one of those electric mini hand blender things.

Although apparently there really is such a thing as too much garlic.

Our chippy does Irish curry, I've always wanted to ask WFH is that but so far have stuck with mild or Chinese curry. Sriracha mayo for the win with fries.

Salad cream on chips ??

Spud-related stuff generally. It also goes great on a crisp butty (particularly with salt and vinegar Seabrook)

I thought I'd found the ideal chip dip in Devon one time when there was some clotted cream that needed finishing.
But a while ago I made proper Dover sole and the beurre noisette (half a pound of butter heated in a pan till it goes brown and nutty) and that is the official winner. Although the hollandaise I made last night comes close.
Yes, I'm fat. And as far as confessions, we always have Hellman's mayo and Heinz salad cream in the cupboard. But that's not the confession - last week I inadvertently picked up a bottle of reduced fat salad cream - and the shame is, I can't taste the difference.

Molten salty butter is the correct accompaniment for all things potato. Possibly with extra salt.

Deviants, the lot of you.

Salt, fair point.

Vinegar, white vinegar has no place on anything other than paint brushes.

Love salad cream....goes with everything including salad (stuff all the fancy salad dressings). Love it with savoury pastries especially sausage rolls and pork pie. Friend at uni always put it on chilli con carne but that was a step too far

This thread can be divided into two poster types:

-The people who are comfortable with who they are and the role salad cream plays in their lives.

-Snobs who don't know what they are talking about.

white vinegar has no place on anything other than paint brushes.

I sprayed it on a carpet the other day to help get rid of the smell of spilt milk. Also put it in some honey mustard dressing* that I made last night. Any other any vinegar won’t cut it. These are the only applications for white vinegar (cleaning and dressings) AFAIK

*Three equal parts Dijon mustard, mayonnaise and honey. Add a little white vinegar, adding, stirring and tasting periodically until is vinegary and runny enough (whilst remaining sweet and honeyed)

you can oxidise wood by wiping it with vinegar that has steel wool dissolved in it.

A late second vote here for tartare sauce. All the fun of mayo, but with crunchy pickle bits in it.
Preferably from a five litre, pump action dispenser at a Belgian cyclocross race…
