[Closed] Sail-type Awnings - Any good and how to orientate?

Something I'd like to try to setup is a sail type awning to cover our (yet to be built) decking area. Hoping to have all of this done by next summer. Thinking I should consider this right now as orientating it to block out the sun might be tricky. I can see what the sun is doing right now to get a future reference for fixings and support. We've currently got a large IKEA parasol which you have to move about, it sort of works but dragging it across the garden throughout the day isn't ideal. Essentially I think the parasol is a bit too tall.

Are the sail type of awnings better than a parasol and how do you work out where to fix them to get maximum cover?

*We are in Edinburgh so it may also double as a rain cover

I'd start by sketching it and mark the rough path that the sun follows. Depending on surrounding fencing etc. you will want some overlap past the deck edge on the sun side(s) to cast shadow fully across the deck. How much might be trial and error.

Make sure you have a low corner or two for rain to come off and ensure that corner is not over the deck.

I have one to still put up but we've done temporary cover with actual sails before and those are roughly what I'm aiming for when I get round to finishing off.
