I was hoping that we wouldn't end up with a thread with that sort of tone about this subject.
I need to lower my expectations.
Is it really tolerance if you stick someones head on a bank note, years after the original crimes?

It's a welcome move… not that I've even seen a 50 squid note this century!
not that I’ve even seen a 50 squid note this century!
Well, quite. The last time I saw a £50 was probably in the late 70s! It's a bit odd really, a lot of shops won't take them because of the high value / perceived risk but £50 today is about the same value as a £20 note in 1989 and a tenner in 1979 and I don't remember those being particularly rare.
Anything that boils the piss of homophobic religious cretins is to be lauded.

I once saw a sandwich van take a £50 note from a road mender for his lunch.
As a retailer every alarm bell in my body was ringing.
Even if it was legit it would have wiped out her float.

Shame the note doesn't include the words - Shortened the war and saved tens, maybe hundreds, of thousands of lives. Rewarded by being hounded to death because of his sexuality.
Will this annoy homophobic religious cretins?
Homophobes, yes.
Cretins, I don't think iodine deficiency is much of a thing nowadays.
Religious types, only if they're homophobes.
Personally I'd bet there will be a few nutters who represent a tiny, tiny minority of people who won't like it and a lot more people who'll use them to stir shit up, probably to sell 'news' papers.
Ooh, I don't know what "chemically castrated" is and I don't want to know* 🙁
I got paid in 50s when I worked on a farm a few years back. They was a pretty colour.
(*though I'm sure rabanwomble has some photos stashed away)

+1.
A great man who did great service.
He shouldn't be defined by his sexuality.
Wikipedia provides a more balanced view of a genius who used his talents the the benefit of millions:

Scoring points is clearly more important. 😐
England leads the world again in tolerance!
In 2013, he was given a posthumous royal pardon for his 1952 conviction for gross indecency following which he was chemically castrated. He had been arrested after having an affair with a 19-year-old Manchester man.
Does not compute...
"Surprisingly, the root of cretin is the Swiss French word crestin, which means “Christian.”"

Maybe it will, then?
I'm surprised that so many passionately opinionated folk bother to comment under BBC News items. 😆
Hopefully it'll wind up bo jo. He refers to gay guys as "bum boys". Oh what a fine man to run the UK 🙄
Does not compute…
Wholeheartedly agree with this.
England leads the world again in tolerance!
What an odd and shortsighted thing to say.
I'm sure this will trigger a horrible row with some truly toe-curling takes trotted out but Turing 100% deserves to be on the note, a he's a bloody national hero and I hope his surviving family are very proud of him.
..and if any homophobes simply can't bear to have gay man on their £50 notes they are very welcome to send them my way.
Does not compute…
I see what you did there.
Half the folk on here would have trouble passing the Turing Test. I reckon I could just about manage it on a good day.
I'm more excited about the Three Bob Note that was also announced today, Its got Dunning on one side and Kruger on the other.

I always groan if I'm given them in anticipation of them being refused- but I've never have any trouble spending them.

No, that one has Hope, Marley and Holness on it.
My only gripe when I read about this earlier today was that they should have put him on a £10 or £20 note. He deserves the respect and recognition for what he did.
It will also manage to offend really really stupid people

Jack knows two things. Himself and shit
It would really piss the Internet off if they realised a lot of the groundwork was done by some women and a few gays... Imagine the outrage!
The numbers geeks will enjoy the binary on the note too 😊
I know you specified "homophobic religious" cretins, but who were you seriously thinking would be offended? I mean, Alan Turing was a brilliant mathematician who essentially gave himself over to the service of his country. He also, like many of his fellow countryfolk, happened to be gay and suffered for it. In that synopsis, I can see no reason whatsoever why someone - indeed, anyone at all - could find cause for offence.
I suspect if we enumerated any number of national and international heroes, we would discover that they were gay.
England leads the world again in tolerance!
Again? WTF?
Homophobes, yes.

I realise you're being facetious here, but using an archaic definition of a word is the result of a strange mind! The word 'slut' and a certain politician springs to mind as another example of this sort of thing...

It’s actually pretty easy to tell when a note is bogus; a ten year old comes to the till with £4.50 worth of goods and hands over a £50 note ‘cos he hasn’t got anything smaller! My g/f gets this on a fairly regular basis, she just passes it to a supervisor and lets them deal with it. If it was me, and I’ve told her this, I’d tell them bluntly that there isn’t sufficient change, and to bugger off and find something smaller.
She’s much more polite than I am...
If these new notes follow the £5 and £10 already in circulation, then faking them will become much, much more difficult, and should restore confidence in the currency.
And I’m so glad that Turing was chosen to go on the note, he was an extraordinary man.
Now, what we need is Ada Lovelace on our currency.
The establishment had finally recognised the power of the pink pound.
I can see no reason whatsoever why someone – indeed, anyone at all – could find cause for offence.
Thats because yo are a reasonable man! Unfortunately not all are. See Isreal Falaou, Westborough baptist church etc

So that’s still 75% male & 100% white. Really disappointing, @bankofengland. You were meant to change your selection procedure to include diversity across the characters as part of the criteria. What went wrong?
Sadly she's bottled it now and made the account private.

I think he had something to do with Manchester encoding to.
who were you seriously thinking would be offended?
Coincidentally, yesterday early evening, there was a programme about 100s (maybe 1000s, I couldn't watch it all) of people sending abusive letters/emails/whatever and threatening to remove their children from schools "teaching them to be gay". Ie. teaching that gay people exist. In 2019.
Those are the sort of people I suspect the OP was wondering about.
It did annoy the self-proclaimed ‘Lobbyist for Big Vagina’ :
She has a point. White Male, Upper class, privately educated. At the heart of the establishment to the point he got a senior role at BP. Being Gay isn't *that* rare - about 3pc and in public boarding schools I suspect a large number might have had homosexual experiences in the 30s. Personally I have no problem celebrating people with a privileged background but I can understand why someone who wants diversity celebrated on bank notes might not regard Turing as a good candidate.
Personally, I think that's all irrelevant. We're celebrating him for his genius and his contribution and there's no harm in using a bank note to do that.
I've reported that outofbreath. I'll ignore it for now.
It’s a welcome move…
It is, but there's still a long way to go. Oddly, the BBC decided to interview Benedict Cumberbatch (who played Alan Turin) for this story and sadly asked him whether the rehabilitation of Alan Turin was now complete (they felt that, along with the Royal Pardon, it was).
The problem is that Alan Turin doesn't need rehabilitating, it's the country that does. A great many in the gay community also felt that the pardon was more of an insult - he's still technically guilt of a crime, he's just being pardoned for his work during the war which mitigates his criminallity. It was also felt that it would have been a much more fitting tribute to Turin if all homosexuals criminalised under UK law were pardoned (arguably better still if the Government apologised and admitted that the law was unjust in the first place).
It's nice that he's being honoured on the £50 note but it's still a rather staid, UK approach that doesn't really do the man justice or recognise the injustice of the criminalisation of homosexuality.
does anyone actually pay attention to who is on the money anyway.
She has a point. White Male, Upper class, privately educated.
she doesn't really. The sex, skin colour and education make no difference to what Turing accomplished. When someone talks about Turing do you imediatly think of those three things or what he did for the country during the war>
