I normally a DIY guy, but this time I just want to pay for someone to do it all. The house is a small two-bedroomed "colonies" flat in Edinburgh. I need to have it completely cleared, then all the walls & ceilings stripped, papered and painted. All skirtings & doors too. It'll be getting all new carpets in at some point.

What rough costs am I going to be looking at?

At a rough guess about 2k but that is very rough as it depends on what paper is being stripped and re hung, size of rooms etc.
Whoever is doing the job would have to see it really for more accurate estimate

what do you mean by cleared?

Is it to remove all contents ie furniture/belongings? As storage/disposal of that will be a big factor in the cost IMHO

The rough guide i gave was decorating only, no idea about removal sorry.
Also when you say doors and skirtings, do you mean strip them as well?
if so you could be looking at waaaay more

if you're wanting it cleared and not wanting to keep the stuff, phone a local charity and they will do it for you. Paint & decorating is going to depend on what kind of nick it is in just now and how much preparation is involved.

Think how long it would take you do it & then budget for approx £100- 150 per day. Athough the 'burg rates are probably more expensive than Glasgow.

Couple of thousand sounds roughly ballpark to me depending on the level of prep required

Thanks for the responses. I'll budget £2.5k for decorating - but I assume the materials are on top of that?

I hadn't thought of the charity shop for clearance. Do those guys have some special dispensation with the council for disposal costs?

normally i would supply materials with the exception of any decorative wallpaper. emulsion, gloss, ucoat and lining paper etc all in the price.
Like i say and has been said all depends on the amount of prep needed, could be a lot if its all woodchip that needs removed.
2.5k is a lot of money for decorating, too much imho if the wallpaper is easily removed and the woodwork just needs undercoat and gloss.
Hope this helps!

2.5k sounds a bit steep for just decorating. Are you doing it up to sell or lease?
Either way you want it presentable but you don't have to spend a lot on materials. If i wasn't going to start my own place I would have decorated it for you for £2.5k 😉

I don't know exactly what the deal is with the charity people- there's probably somethings that they cannot take due to safety eg. couches with flame retardant markings. But they could probably take a lot of it.

Isn't Sharki a bit North of you and renting his body out?
