Just witnessed some poor sod trying to drive into the multi-storey car park at Ocean Terminal (Edinburgh) with the bike on the roof. Didn't work but they got a fair way up the ramp before stopping. You'd have though the horrible crashing noises would have alerted them to something being amiss. That and the fact they broke the chains on the hanging height restrictions board.
Live and learn, live and learn.
Been there, done that. Although I wasn't driving, I did totally forget about the bike on the roof same as the driver 🙂
it's one of the reasons I've always gone for a rear mounted carrier where possible.
You do remember the bikes are up there, mostly, but I've forgotten when in strange town and trying to find a route/parking (without disaster).
A friend of mine got a lovely cotic soul built up with magura durins, nice wheels hope hubs etc.
On way back from the bike shop after it's 6 week settling in service he drove under the car park barrier at his local waitrose.
It's now got rebas and a different front wheel! 🙁
I did this in a laybay on the 303 the other week. Initially I was devastated as I thought I'd recked the roofbars, car and bike.
Amazingly the bike escaped unscathed appart from a mis-shaped brake hose, the roofbars failed and one corner ripped from the car. £80 for a new roof bar and all was fixed.
Fortunatley I was able to repack the car and continue my journey.
When we did it, we were using a really crappy old roof rack, which fortunately relinquished its grip on the bike before any damage was done 🙂
Dad parked in our garage with my sisters bike on the roof (well not any more) TWICE in a fortnight.
I saw one of these get written off the other day. Was at some services on the m5 after twentyfour12. Poor sod driving hadn't had much sleep!

When on a camping trip I went in a multi-story car park. It didn't take me long to realise I still had my roofbox on!!
Yes Landslip carpark off Leith Hill- massive moss-covered huge-wooden joist with trees branches hanging down on a very early Sat morning. Car stopped. I assumed it was on shail so squirted it and my bike landed behind the car 🙄
Funnily later on in the year this huge wooden joist was in the weeds and smashed up abit. I'm guessing someone was abit more violent and vengeful than I was 😉
Cost to me: front wheel replace and new hose on front brake.
